filament issue - retraction or speed

Post by jtaylor »

Hello all,

Just want to say thank you to everyone first!

Finished my rostock max build and I have some issues and questions I would love some direction with:

Calibration - can someone point me to the best information out there for calibrating. height, delta radius etc...
I was really worried about delta arm blues but I think I'm ok.

I think Retraction is my main issue: is this something that the Steve's extruder has trouble with. The image below shows the trouble I'm having. I hope I'm just missing something and need to spend more time with Slic3r. I've been using ReplicatorG for so long.

Are there better options than Steve's extruder? Bad thing is, I bought two hoping to build a dual extrusion system. I have a replicator 1 (dual) and a thing-o-matic at work and I really like the extruders on them. Super easy!

Has anyone successfully got multiple extruders running? What hot ends/extruders?

I created a thread about my calibration experience in the Rostock Max specific forum. http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=1735

Which firmware are you using? Marlin, or Repetier?

Either way, most of the adjustments that you need to make are in the configuration.h tab of the program, and most of them have decent descriptions. It's worth reading the whole page just so that you know all of the things that you can tweak.

I have been fighting with calibration cubes for a while (my .5mm thin wall test cube had inconsistent wall thicknesses) and slicing the test object with Cura instead of Slic3r solved the issue I'd been fighting on the first try. I would suggest trying both KISS and Cura before devoting a lot of your time to Slic3r. I think it's a great program, and I really really like how integrated it is with Repetier Host, but I've personally had better luck with other software and wish I had discovered this earlier. On that topic, there's also a great shootout between the 3 big slicing programs in the first issue of RepRap Magazine, definitely check that out! http://reprapmagazine.com/

jtaylor, check out the new extruder on Seemecnc.com that takes the place of the Steve's extruder.
Its about $25 and comes with the mounting laser cut wood even though it doesn't state that. Nice extruder, direct drive.
