Octoprint - Status Update.

Post by daftscience »

I want to give props to foosel for getting this working for us. OctoPrint
Their development is amazing, and project looks like it's just going to keep getting better.

So here is what I'm interested in.

The drag and drop features is a nice way to upload the your gcode files. They get stay there until you delete them.

Realtime view of printing and gcode files. I haven't played with it much, but it looks like it has some pretty nice settings.

Terminal output.

But the feature I like the most is the ability to make customizable controls.

I think I could find some better names for the buttons. But basically that allows you to find the Z=0 for the center and each calibration point. Also, when you find new max Z height you can plug it in and store that value for all three axis in the EEPROM. All of that is so much faster than with repetier host.

Also there is webcam streaming, which I haven't looked into yet.

Because I had been having a bit of trouble with my hotend I went back to RH. I plan on switching back now that it's all sorted out.

All in all I find it much more convenient than RH if you have some GCode and want to print it as is. But if you're calibrating, adjusting things I think RH is still better. Also, the rPi as some difficulty handling complex gcode (honeycomb infill greater than 50%.)

I've been following the GIT and there has been a lot of development on it.

Any experience with Repetier server? I'm currently working on setting a pi up for it now.

Yeah, I played around with it. Once Foosel worked out the issues with the connection, I found Octoprint to be much better than Repetier server. It was more user-friendly, and IIRC actually gave more options than RS (Temp Graph, Gcode Viewer, webcam support, and file uploading was much simpler). I don't know if it would have the same issues with complex gcode.
