Carriages falls down?

Post by Unstuck »

Hi! I just got the best birthday present ever last month. Have had lots of fun putting it together and only occasionally giggling like a schoolgirl.

I ordered off for some kapton tape to assemble the hot end with, and while I was waiting I figured I'd try to assess how level I managed to get the bed.

Unfortunately, it seems if I get the head too close to a column, something seems to happen. I took a video of it happeninghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNCkM8xCseIZ (Around :25 in.)

I've tried searching in the forums for a couple of days, but I'm not sure how to describe it.

The dial caliper mounted on the head seems lighter than the hot end, so I don't think it's that. The belt's teeth are intact. It happens almost identically to whichever column I raise the platform up to - it seems unlikely to me that all three steppers are bad.

I'm kinda lost, to be honest.

First of all, love the nick. If your first name was Come, I could _easily_ see this:

Person 1: Who's that?
Person 2: Oh, he's Come Unstuck!

Person 1: *steps back a bit* Um, sorry to hear that, but what's his name?
Person 2: ...

(Well ok, I'll admit it sounds funnier in my head than in a forum post...)
:D

I really don't see anything bad happening there. Is the move back towards the center uncommanded?

Couple of things - what version of the firmware are you using? What kind?(merlin or repetier)

I suggest you take a look at the software & calibration sections of the 2nd edition of the assembly manual.

turn off the stepper sleep mode in firmware/eeprom, when the steppers go into sleep mode (displays shows steppers disabled) Is when this usually happens.

I had a heck of a time calibrating my z because the steppers would go into sleep mode and cause the z to lower,

this may also be what your experiencing.

note: it never did this when using polygons repetier firmware, it started doing this with seemecnc repetier firmware so its probably just a firmware setting.

Cambo3d has it! I entered
G1 Z150 x100 y-50
Just like in the video, and the head is still hanging there, five minutes later. Thanks!

The tape arrived this morning, so I'll be assembling the head tomorrow - Then maybe making a giant plastic mess that vaguely resembles a cube. But I don't want to get ahead of myself.

...I'd never thought of the whole "... Third base!" aspect of this. :)

I take it you're Gene Buckle, as in 'Copyright 2012 by Gene Buckle' in the Version 1.17 of the manual I'm currently using?

This is what I get for not checking back for a new manual - after about the sixteenth time trying to get the limit switch wires down the tower extrusion I seriously considered just removing the belt and doing it over - but I got it eventually.

Yep, that's me. One of the reasons for the 2nd edition manual was to sensibly fold in the tribal knowledge accumulated by other builders into the mainline manual.
