What am I missing...

Post by @CiDG »

Hi!

I'm having a litte trouble I think when it comes to finding the "sweet spot" in terms of temperature with my printer. I started printing at 205-213c with ABS on glass coated in ABS glue and the print seemed fragile. Great shape and accuracy in terms of dimensions, but the layers could crackle when squeezed and with little effort I sould be able to break the layers apart on thin walled objects. My the way, the extruder is having no trouble pushing the filament and the extruder oozes quite a bit when it gets up to temp.
Here is an example:

Ignore the poor appearance where the part widens near the bottom. I drew the part for RIM and it isn't well suited for reprap type prints.

Last night I read that temps of 235c are better suited to ABS and I thought I'd give it a try. Oozes quite a bit and has had a bit of leakage at the resistor on one side, but it's quite a smal bit of leakage and it seemed to fix itself. This is the result, although the interior walls are very crisp and clean. I am not sure if the motion of the extruder, the temperature or the extruder speed is the culprit.

What are your thoughts?

Also I had an issue with a conical part where the top of the cone couldn't cool enough to keep it's shape. I've seen some phenominal prints on makerbot rigs that have really great detail and fine points and such. The thought of printing gears, cones, thin parts, anything but the simple shapes I really need this for at the present scares me. I want to have some fun with this when I can get this buisiness out of the way.

I used Slic3r on this with 20% infil and the perimeters at 3.

What can I do to prevent this?

For thin and small feature parts try slowing the print speed down, in some cases WAAAYYY down.
It's not just about temperature of the Hotend.
The 10x10x40mm tower is a good test print to dial in temperature and speed on objects with small features.

Agreed, slow down the print speed, add a fan, and lower your print temps. I usually print ABS (black) around 210-215C and for the small 10x10x40mm tower my printer goes around 80mm/min (sloooooow).
