Power Supply wont come on

Post by jjtime »

Well, I finally got up enough nerve to start up for the first time. Went out an got a fire estinquisher, hooked up to extension cord and turned on power. Nothing I mean nothing happened. No power supply, no fan nothing. Any ideas?

Could be a dead PSU, or a short.
Did you connect the on pins to the switch?
Did you cut the other wires, or leave them, if you did, did you leave the sense pins connected?

Disconnect it from the Rambo, the fan should run if it's powered on, then you sould check the voltage out with a multimeter.

I'm sure you checked, but it's set for your local voltage right (115/220)?
Purple = sarcasm

Please do a board search before posting your question, many have been answered with very time consuming detail already.

Did you connect the green wire?

Green wire connected.

115v only choice available. Onlly clipped yellow and black wires as required and needed. Don't know what sense wires are.

I can run the software off my laptop and go as far as checking the end stops which all check ok but motors will not come on and drive
to home. Send G28 and no response or movement at all. Neither will the light come on the LED screen. Seems like only
what my laptop will power works.

For this you will need a multimeter and an anti-ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded piece of metal. Wear the wrist strap whenever you are messing with the board.

Test for continuity between the stepper pin headers and the places where you've crimped the extension wires to the stepper motor wires. Does everything check out, and did you connect the wires in the right order?
No: Recheck your work. Make sure the pins are crimped properly. They have two sets of jaws. The jaws at the end are supposed to hold the rubber wire insulation and the jaws closer to the middle are supposed to hold the copper wire itself.
Yes: Test passed.

Does the fan in the power supply spin up when you turn it on?
No: Check the power cord, and check that the power switch is soldered correctly. With the PSU unplugged, check that there is continuity between the terminals of the switch when it's thrown.
Yes: Test passed.

With the 6-wire terminal block from the PSU disconnected from the board, check the voltage between pins 1 and 2, then 3 and 4, then 5 and 6. You should show +12V. Is it 12V and is the polarity correct?
No: Either it isn't wired to the terminal block correctly, or the power supply is off or malfunctioning.
Yes: Test passed.

There is a jumper next to the USB port that controls whether the board is powered over USB or the power supply. If you plug in the USB cable and see blinky lights, it's set to run off USB. Unplug the USB cable and switch the jumper. With the USB cable still unplugged, switch on the power supply. Do you see blinky lights?
No: Get a pair of tweezers and pull both of the fuses. They look like this: http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDet ... 0448005.MR - Test the fuses for continuity. If either fails the test, it will have to be replaced.
Yes: Test passed - put the fuses back in!

Now reconnect everything, turn on the PSU, watch the blinky lights on the board turn on, and go into Repetier. Turn on the fan. Does it spin up? If you don't have a fan, test the voltage across the Fan 0 terminals on the board. Are you showing 12 volts?
No: Take another look at those fuses because I bet one of them is blown.
Yes: Test passed.

If you passed all those tests, I'd take another look at the stepper wiring.

I just finished rewiring the stepper motors and crimping new pins.
Still no power supply.
I checked all wiring.
However I did notice when trying to get a voltage reading across the power switch that the lower switch lead was moving so I pulled on it very easily and it
came right out of the switch. Is it possible that all this time I've had a bad switch.
Nevertheless even when I disconnect everything and just activate the PS there is no response at all. The only step I have left is to pull the PS and check the fuses. I don't see how they could have blown tho as I never had any trace of power.....

Incidently I had to change my email address and user name, was jjtime now [email protected]. I don't know how to erase the old one from the forum.

Can you get continuity across the center and either of the outer legs of the switch?

At the top of the screen on the right there is an icon that looks like a gear, that is the user control panel. You open that then go to profile - edit account settings.
That is where you can put in a new email address.

I was measuring 10.2v across the switch before the lower leg of the switch pulled out. Now I need a new switch and don't see them on
the shopping cart so if I can find the same one on the internet I can get it thro amazon in 2 days I have free shipping thru them. Not sure
what to look for theres no name on it and I want it to fit that LED door slot. Looks like 5amp 125v switch, I don't know if I can get the
same physical size without knowing who made it.

Is the lead that came out on the side or in the middle? If it's one of the sides you can just use the lead on the other side, the one in the middle has to be present though. Send SeeMeCNC an email asking about the switch. If Amazon doesn't have it, try Mouser, Jameco, or DigiKey to order a new one.

If you touch the two wires together that would normally go to the switch, does the fan spin up? If not, you either have a bad cord or a bad PSU.

The switch that you guys sent me only had 2 legs middle and 1 side. It was the side that pulled out not the middle

Pilot I also now have 12.3 volts on the power block at all 3 checks. It must have been a short in the switch that did it and when I checked the switch I must have had enough pressure on the meter leads to push them together to get the 10.2 volts across the switch. Oh what a relief, lost a whole week mostly thinking about what I could have done wrong. You might check all your switches before you send them out or throw in an extra one that is good. I know a dollar or two adds up over 100's of customers, but so does the time they lose doubting and checking themselves.

I'm not sure how you're getting 26.3 volts. It's a 12 volt power supply!

short = means sending positive directly to ground.

In the case of the rostock power supply, this is a logic signal and would actually turn on your power supply because your sending the green wire to ground in the power supply. so this doesn't make sense.
if you had a short in your switch, (assuming you had it wired correctly) your power supply would be on all the time as soon as you plugged it in.

sounds like you had a bad switch/incorrect switch/bad wiring
simple test would be to connect the green wire, to one of the black wires on the power supply and your power supply will turn on.
