Small camera stabilizer

Post by ApacheXMD »

I was tired of watching my dad taking shaky videos of my 18month-old kid when he's running around. So I looked into stabilizers/steadicams. There are lots of solutions out there, from the expensive, to the ugly.

I focused in on a diy version of the Merlin, and was inspired by wsclater's works.

So I designed my own 3D printable stablizer:

Files are up on thingiverse, if you wanna play around with them.

I'm working on getting some sample footage uploaded to youtube in the next day or so.

Very cool! :) I need to figure out how to clone myself so I can have more time to make stuff  Check out this post. It will inspire you to print that quadcopter you know you've(I've) been thinking about :D

Nah, just fiberglass. Left over from the RostockMax magnetic arm upgrade :)

Not much point in trying to save weight on stablizer parts...the whole principle of the device is based on inertia, which requires mass. Most of those washers are there solely to add weight.

Absolutely. The choice of fiberglass rods wasnt to save weight, it was to use what I had on hand. The published scad files are there so you can modify the parts and use whatever you have on hand. One could use wood dowels, bamboo, or even printed rods.

A few months ago I was playing around with a stabilizer design made from 1/2inch EMT electrical conduit. Only that required welding.

This is the kind of stuff that makes 3D printing seem like more than a hobby. Good job.

Great invention...
What is its load capacity?

I am having Flycam flyboy-III stabilizer http://www.proaimshop.com/pas/FLYCAM-Fl ... W-GPI.html. Handheld steadycam for shake-free videos providing professional results.
