Update 2-26-14 My printer is almost complete

Post by thenewguy »

Going to hook up a arduino separate to the printer. This will allow my glass window to open and close with a push button, stepper motor, limit switches. Ect. May also use it to control temps inside the case or other needs.

May put some amp and volt display at the bottom of the case for fun next to the buttons.

Have two rolls of film ready for dual extruders at the top right.

Have most of the parts to switch to magnetic ball joints.
image.jpg
Since I upgraded my power supply which is still 12v but almost 60amps now I beefed up my heating bed with mic-6 and around 300watts to heat it up. Takes about 15 mins to get to 100c which is still longer than I thought but not bad! Before with the onyx under it took over an hour for that big mic-6.
This is also on a relay to the Rambo.
image.jpg
Can level the bed with screw adjustment so far no problems with heat.
image.jpg
Had to fill in the slot that I cut out for the onyx. So just put some blue leds on one of the heating elements so I know when it turns on and off. : )

Hopefully more mods to come and better pictures...

Wow.

Gonna need loads of details on this one...

Where did you source the Mic-6 bed?
What are the lights on the front for?
Will you post your drawings?

John I got my mic plate here http://www.sandsmachine.com/alumweb.htm
Took my router with a circle jig on it and cut it to size.

What do you mean by drawings? Prints?

The buttons are for power, reset on Rambo so I don't have to take the front cover off all the time and two are for my 10 watt leds. One at the top and a adjustable one on the side. Two buttons are spares and the blank two holes will be for up and down buttons for the glass window which I'm impressed with. It seals pretty well from the room. Just need to rig something up to move it. I'm thinking a timing belt stepper motor and some limit switches on an arduino will work ok.

Will upgrade to better extruder soon.

Can I ask why after all that work, amazing btw, you don't have an lcd controller mounted outside that box?
Purple = sarcasm

Please do a board search before posting your question, many have been answered with very time consuming detail already.

Because I bought this in December. Tried many ways to get the thing working right with Rambo. Don't know if it was a lose wire. Something was backwards or the firmware.

So I said I don't need you anyways... Haha
Been anti ever since.

I like using host on my 32inch pc screen. I have a dual video output on my graphics card and had a old thick but decent size pc screen laying around maybe 17 inch. Ended up being to heavy, thick, and just really had no place to mount it. I thought about putting it on a hinge and mount on the side of the box or something. Just felt like overkill. I got it from work. So it's old school but was very expensive at the time. Maybe $1500

"Can level the bed with screw adjustment so far no problems with heat."

I am interested in your system for mounting the bed. Is it possible to go into a little more detail
on how you mounted the bed and incorporated the adjustability.
One great build!

Adding "adjustability" to the bed simply means that he's added a huge problem for himself and nothing more. One of the benefits of the Delta configuration is the fact that you never, ever have to "adjust" the bed as long as you make sure the machine is square when you build it.

Geneb, I agree with you; however, with his own bed, I would anticipate that he's accommodating the non-stock bed.

Maybe mine must just hate me, or I've done something wrong I just can't see because I have checked and adjusted my towers a couple times a week so far to keep them square to their structure, and I'd likely just give in if I already had the option and adjust the bed to compliment the tower shift if it reduced the frequency of my tower adjustments.

*I've checked all the accessable screws most of those times (not EVERY time because I really hate trying to do anything inside the base) and the towers don't have any twist/orientation problems, but damn they like to sneakily shift toward and from the delta center (0,0).

Update

Post by thenewguy »

So I thought I would give you a good update. I have taken this thing apart so many times with constant upgrades I don't get to many chances to print. But I do finally have it working close to how I want it. I do still have to install the Arduino controlled glass window. Other than that
Enjoy.

Upgraded to the 20 tooth pulleys. Installed heat sinks with a fan on the back of each motor. Also have the dampeners installed.

A lot of mods in this picture. The best one is my added support to the frame of the rostock. I noticed it was not too sturdy and questioned it. So I built these which are pretty adjustable to where it really helps me align my towers. With this and the adjustable aluminum bed things are pretty accurate all the way up. I Printed and installed the belt tension set shared on this forum. Installed a centrifugal fan with a carbon filter to eliminate odors. It also can be wired later to do more like control the temps inside.

When looking through the window I could see the top of the rostock pretty easy. I didn't like that. So I bought longer towers. My z height is now 487. Not sure if I will ever need it .

This is a good picture to notice the added heating elements. I have 5 40w heating elements normally used for hotends installed into the aluminum bed for faster heating times. They are on a cheap relay kit sold on seemecnc. I did install the onyx back under the aluminum to get very even temps along the plate. The onyx takes over after a few temps from the outer heating elements.

thenewguy, great job on the printer. Looks fantastic and also seems to work great.

I'm confused though:
Why choose peltier elements for heating?
How are you even getting 100C from them?
Seems like a 110V coil wire would be much more efficient then the peltier elements, no?

The peltier elements worked. I had it to 105c with less effort than the onyx. However they lasted a few months and started to lose preformance. It also created hot spots on my bed. Even with that big piece of aluminum.

So now I have the onyx underneath set to 100c on the pid. I then installed 5 40w heater like in the e3d on another relay/controller set to around 95c. I can get my bed to 100c in around 25 mins now. Not as fast as I want but it's not easy either.

Did you get the plastic portion from Thingiverse and if so do you remember the number?

I don't think I got it off of thingverse. I believe I have the file on my computer if you need it though.

It would be nice if you can find the file but don't spend a lot of time searching if you are not sure where it is.
The one that you are using looks good and has already been tested by yourself, that's why I asked.

Thank you! I should have remembered that but this forum is getting so large it is difficult to remember what was posted and where.
