ceramic printers

Post by homerjay »

I have been directing a couple of undergraduate students in an effort to adapt a Rostock Max for printing of ceramics and slurries. We picked up a Rostock Max in early June, as SeeMeCNC is only a 30 min. drive from us (Notre Dame). I got to meet John and Steve and see their operation (thanks guys - I will be back over some time in the fall!). A week later I returned with a couple of high school teachers (1 math, 1 chemistry) and returned to campus with a 2nd machine. The two teachers built one machine and I am happy to report it is being used in a high school math class (New Prairie HS) this fall. They did this with little help from the undergrads, who were 1 week ahead in the build, which I think served as a good test case showing that a non-techie can build the kit, especially with Gene B’s excellent build guide. About 10 curriculum lesson plans were developed (this was part of an RET program (http://ret.nd.edu/) ) that will used in a high school geometry class this fall. When they get about halfway into the semester I will try to report back on how things are going for them.

Our efforts on the other machine have been dedicated to modifying our machine for ceramic slurries. I have described this in the mods & upgrades part of the forum.

Many thanks to the posters on this board who answered some of the issues that we encountered.

I'm at ND and have a Rostock too! What a small world.

You know that there's a Makerspace in Goshen on Thursday nights that several of us Rostock owners attend on a weekly basis. The SeeMeCNC guys are there, the guys who organized and hosted Midwest RepRap Fest, and Brian and Eric from Trick Laser come too. There's quite the Rostock printing brain-trust there on an average Thursday night. We meet at a place called "the Local" in Goshen next to the police station. You should come show off your machines!

Jim,

I knew from your postings you were also at ND. I figured I would lay low until we were up and running. John told me about the Makerspace. I might be too lazy to make it over in the near term, but later in the fall I will come over.

If you want to see the ceramic machine some time during the day (escape from work!) drop me an email (pmcginn at nd dot edu). It is over in Riley Hall (Art bldg).
