Anyone running different hot ends?

Post by Polygonhell »

I had another melt down last night, this one was entirely my fault, not enough high temperature silicone, I think the thermister had crept out of the little hole causing it to read very low, but close enough for the resistors to keep up.
Net result was I noticed brown plastic running down the hot end (yes the peek was melting).
Astonishingly I managed to reclaim everything except the PTFE tube and run another print, but I think the peek tube is now permanently fused to the steel part of the heater and the cross piece.
I have a space SeeMeCNC hot end if I finally kill this one, but given I only have experience with the one hot end I was wondering if others were running other types and what their experiences were.

Yes, I have had a few problems with the original 1.75mm hot end (I am using different electronics, Gnexlab Gen 2 controller). I was having a problem with the stepper warming the plastic side piece of the extruder drive and the gears would skip. I installed a brace to eliminate that problem. I was also running some pretty aggressive feed and accel rates. I then ordered the 3mm head only to suffer from similar problems. I then took a Makerbot MK6 lower along with their thermocouple and heating element and screwed it onto the H1's PEEK insulator (same threads on nozzle and Peek insulator). I could now theoretically use Seemecnc or makerbot nozzles. I have slowed down my A feed and accleration rates and am lessening my stalling and getting pretty decent flows. Now I am off to figure out temperatures, lifting of the Z during moves and why I watch my PEEK flex as the Z doesnt raise enough for the next layer. There are quite a few settings within Slic3r that have an effect I am sure. BTW, I have all of this installed on an A2ZCNC mill. The only thing original is the extruders drive, and the stepper was changed out for a 6 wire, (controller incompatibility with the 4 wire). I will post some pics eventually.

I'm now on my second hotend, killed the first one when the thermocouple pulled out.
The second one is the improved design with te PEEK capturing the PTFE tubing and the different shaped nozzle.
I also added a fan to help stop the PLA jams.
Touch wood, I have run through most of a 2lb roll of PLA without an issue.
I have a BudaSchnozzle hotend sitting here, but my intent is to use it for a project.

It should be noted I think the cold end design of the extruder is actually very good and I've had no issues with mine, though I'm only running 1.75mm filament which usually requires less pressure than 3mm.

Does anyone know where I can get a JHead hotend set up for 1.75mm filament?

You can find a list of suppliers for the JHead at http://reprap.org/wiki/J_Head_Nozzle#Suppliers

I have been using my original H-1 extruder with little to no issue and I have about 7lbs of white and black 1.75mm ABS through it.
Only thing I have had to do is disassemble and clean the tip and replace the PTFE liner.

I have not found a supplier of 1.75mm J-Head hot ends. Let me know if you do!
