Swapping stock out, Rambo logic voltage supply questions

Post by jestah »

Hi Guys,

As i could not get enough heat into my heated bed I ordered a 15v 23a supply that I have wound up to around 17v. With the added power I am having MUCH better results with parts sticking!

I do not mind having two psu wired up but is it possible to supply 17-18v to the motors+logic and mosfets power inputs?

I have had a bit of a look on the rambo wiki and it seems all three power inputs can accept up to 24v but I wanted to ask if this is the "done" thing or am I about to cook my rambo.....

Yes, it is possible to supply 17-18V to the motors+logic and mosfets power inputs.
One Company who does this to their commercial printer is the Makergear M2 which uses 19V. I know that because
I own one of the printers. It will work fine. The motors will run a little warmer than they would at 12V but they will
still run and no damage will be done. My M2 printer is a fine little printer and it loves running on 19 volts.

I can't verify any of Eaglezsoar comments about the board handling the increased voltage, but I can add that the extra voltage should actually improve the performance of your stepper motors a bit. Steppers "refresh" their torque-holding ability much faster with additional voltage, within reasonable limits, due to the effects of the winding inductance.

Yep, up to 24v input is no problem. IF you needed higher voltage, you could wait until the 1.2 comes out, which will be up to 36v input capable, as well as opto-isolation from USB/Power supply, thermistor short circuit protection (NO MORE BURNED OUT THERM PORTS!!) and some other safety/failproofing. UltiMachine's done an awesome job with updating and making each version better and better.

When they come out with the new version, will you accept trade-ins of the old models? :P
