Anyone using the RUMBA instead of RAMBO?

Post by 0110-m-p »

I am currently piecing together my "custom" Rostock Max build and am considering running the RUMBA controller instead of the RAMBO. Two main reasons being that I can replace the motor drivers in the RUMBA if I ever need to and it is less expensive. Is anyone currently running the RUMBA controller on their Max?

I am not using the Rumba on my Max but I do have one. As long as you wire it correctly and install the Windows driver (if you are using Windows), it will work fine.
All of these different flavors of boards will work. Some people like the fact that the Rambo is compact and has all the necessary electronics on one card, others would
rather be able to replace the drivers if they become faulty. The underlying electronics are all Arduino based and they will work on the Max and most any printer. If
that is the card you want to use then go for it. Make sure you load the driver and that you have chosen that card in the firmware.

I have not used one, but I have a RUMBA on my bench to be installed in a 3DR printer once I get around to asssembling it. The board seems quite nice.

Here's what I can say: it will work just fine, as the "core" processor is of the same family, if not identical, to that in the RAMBO (I'm too lazy to check for sure right now). The catch is that you will probably not find too much help around here when it comes to troubleshooting the electronics, as people just aren't as familiar with it. There are a few non-RAMBO MAXs, but not too many that I know of. I'm one - I run with a modified RAMPS and standard Arduino Mega. I went this route so that when I upgrade my electronics, as I know I will be moving to 32-bit ARM in the near future, I will still have the Arduino that I can incorporate into some other project.

TL;DR: If you are at all uncomfortable or unfamiliar with Arduino-based micros, then I would recommend getting the RAMBO just for the ease of obtaining community support.

Thanks for the info. It looks like I'm changing gears on my plans anyway and am just going to buy the complete kit from SeeMeCNC rather than sourcing on my own.

The original plan was to build my own based on the Trick Laser frame, carbon arms, and use an e5d hot end. The hope was that I could buy all the components with the upgrades and break nearly even on the kit price. After sourcing and pricing out all the components for the build over the past couple of weeks it ends up I was wrong and either method yields basically the same cost (mostly due to shipping from multiple sources). So I'm going to save myself the time and energy, just buy the kit and the upgrades separately.

UH HUH! Trying to cheap out on the SeeMeCNC.com.
They got your number now buddy! (Just kidding, I tried and found out the same thing you did).
I ended up buying the kit also.
Anyways, welcome to the Forum and don't forget to get a copy of the latest docs and start a build log.
We love to see pictures in a build log and see how the build progresses.
Happy Printing!

Haha...caught me red handed. In all fairness though, I was still going to be spending the better part of $400 with seemecnc if I sourced the parts on my own.

Anyway, the start of my build thread will be probably be my next post since I am hopefully going to order the kit tomorrow.

I've used a Rumba on my max, along with Rambo, Ramps, AZteegx3(My current favorite).

They all work very similarly, if you get any real hangups ask away. But it's not too bad. No more or less difficult than any of the others.
