Testing without heat

Post by Dust2Dust02 »

I have my printer together sans the heating stuff. It is giving me an error when I try to do anything but home the axis saying something about temperature. I assume it is a fail safe and I have 2 main questions with little sub questions.

Can I run the printer the way it is now (without thermistors or heating elements) ?
If so how?

I want to print without the heated bed. With Nylon. I have looked into this a little but am still unsure, am I crazy and should not attempt this?
Is it even possible?
If so how?
(the biggest reason for my desire is KISS... less variables easier prototyping, and also fire hazards... less things heated, less fire possible.)

Thanks to all in the community who help! I hope to be of assistance once I get up and running.

If you don't have a thermistor plugged in it will register this error, unless you set the thermistor in the firmware to null. Either change the firmware or plug a thermistor in.

Also apparently RichRap has printed on blue painters tape with Nylon and it works pretty well.

How would one go about editing firmware? I am familiar with line code and editing, I am just not familiar with how to do it on THIS hardware...

Could anyone point me at a simple tutorial or a very specific how to? Please and thank you!

printing nylon on painter's tape is sorcery and witchcraft and i refuse to believe it works in the real world.

70-80C heated bed with glue stick works well. Garolite sheets work best.

Well I will prove you wrong then Cope :D my Ultimaker lacks a heated bed, and I will get it to print Nylon on Blue Tape if its the last thing I do.

I guess I should say that I do know that Nylon will adhere to the tape, but I've never been able to keep the tape from pulling up off the glass while printing... if you find a trick, please tell me. I'd love to not use glue.

if the traditional neat way of putting tape on the ultimaker bed doesn't work, ill try wrapping it around the sides, maybe that will work :)

No idea the community was so polarized on this. I will try my best to get some info for you.

Any info on the firmware editing would be helpful.

May I ask how many 3D printers do you have?

Amazing? No.

Just shy of either a 12 step program or an intervention? Probably.

:) I have some friends that either don't have the time or knowledge to work on them themselves, so I do it for them. I finally had to give up the MAX I had the pleasure of working with for so long. ;( that was a sad day indeed. And now my ultimaker is out for a but because i apparently didn't buy hardened steel rods so the balls in the linear bearings cut groves in my 6mm rods ;(

I was going to say that you certainly CAN edit the firmware to bypass the mintemp protocol, but I would HIGHLY recommend against doing it. You do not need to have the heated bed wired up, AFAIK, to run the hotend. Simply do not engage power to the bed. I believe both of the default "Preheat XXX" supply power to the bed, which would trigger the min temp warning and disable the printer. You can manually set the extruder's temp though and SHOULD be able to print without wiring the heated bed. If you do not want to ever use the heated bed (I think it's a nice feature to have, even if you aren't planning on using it) you could simply set the variable for having a heated bed in either Marlin or Repetier to false and not have to worry about it.
