Custom Nozzles for E3D Hotend

Hey everyone with an E3D hotend - We've got a pending order in for some nozzles to be machined locally.

We've made some slight changes to the design, but nothing that will affect functionality.

We plan on making some .2mm, .8mm, and 1.0mm nozzles, but we can make any size you'd like.

If you're interested in trying out a different nozzle size, PM me and when I get a final tally, I'll give you the price - but it should be around $8/ea + shipping.

In all honesty can you gave me a reason what I what make with a .8 an 1mm nozzle? I am curious what I would use them for. And what would you recommend
for a well rounded nozzle for the E3D printing primarily the Trimmer line. I have the .4 so I am thinking the .2, .6, .8 and 1mm for a complete collection but first I
will wait for your answer of what the .8 and 1mm nozzles could be used for. (Building printed beams for a new skyscraper).

Do you think you could pull off a .15mm nozzle? I'd like to give that a try :)

Eagle - I've found through experience (and subsequent research into the chemistry/science behind it) that Nylon and PC are VERY different materials when extruded at different heights and widths. It may seem a bit counter-intuitive, but I've printed the same part in nylon at .15, .20, .25, .28, .3, .35, .40, .45, and .5mm layer heights with 55% infill and the .45 and .5mm layer heights are DRAMATICALLY stronger parts.

Interlayer adhesion is related directly to extrusion width (up to a point). Also, because nylon flows very well, vertical resolution is still good at higher heights - much better looking than ABS or PLA at the same height.

I'm not sure what .8 or 1.0mm nozzles will do, but that's why I'm going to give it a shot. Plus, for simple, boxy shaped prints, .8 and 1.0mm nozzles will print incredibly quickly.

So to answer your question, the reason you'd want bigger for nylon or PC is if you need/want strong, functional parts without a high level of detail.

And yes, we can make a .15mm nozzle. Shall I add you to the list Nylocke?

Larger nozzles are being used by a couple of the UM guys for printing single wall vases more quickly as well. They are charging something like a Euro a minute to print the stuff, so the larger nozzles keep the prices in check a bit while allowing the machine to still produce a very nice final product by allowing for a greater overhang on thick layers.

You could put me down for a .2, .7 and 1 mm nozzle set from ya cope, if you wouldn't mind the custom sizing :)

Sounds awesome! We're introducing 0.3 and 0.35 soon too to our range. Want to get some smaller ones on the go too.

Just to nitpick and be a boring business person - the designs we release are for non-commercial use only. So if you're just recycling that with a smaller orifice then technically you are kind of infringing. I don't really mind, and I really want some small stuff to be out there for experimentation purposes too. Moving open printing forward is my real passion, and small nozzles are really awesome! :D

If you send me over some samples and I deem them good I would be happy for you to be officially "E3D" approved. It would also let me know what potential issues might be that might cause support problems for me back on the customer service end.

Understood. As a patent and IP holder, I wouldn't knowingly infringe on anyone else's work. We're not doing that. Designed a new nozzle to fit in your hot end. Not sure if it's something we'll do anything with commercially (doubtful) - but for now, just offering them to forum people for our cost + shipping.

Sorry, should have noted that I too am running a 3mm setup and would need it for my set of nozzles.

I have a special request. I'd like a .35 nozzle, and I'd like it to have a very small flange on the threaded part so that it contacts the heater block's bottom face when tightened. The flange should be small so it doesn't throw off the heat dissipation characteristics, but large enough that the surface area helps create a more positive thread lock than heating to 320C alone. Obviously the part between the flange and the nozzle body would be as thin as usual, but not threaded.

I recognize that I will have to be super careful when tightening so that I don't break anything. I also recognize that it might suck and not work and mess everything up. If so it's my fault and I won't ask for a refund. Also, if the flange idea turns out to be good and you want to use it you have my blessing but I'd like attribution.

These are brass, right? I'm not touching any aluminum nozzles.

BTW, for anyone thinking about a custom nozzle size, I have used .25 and .35 before and they are GREAT! .25 lets you have nice fine features and .35 is an excellent tradeoff between speed and fineness. It really does make a difference over a .40 nozzle. Just keep in mind that the smaller the diameter, the slower the filament, and that means you may have to reduce your temperature due to the lower amount of filament flow.
