Nexus 7 dock for my VW CC

Post by replicant »

So, I'll admit that all of these prints were done on our makerbot replicator 2 at work, HOWEVER, I'm in the middle of assembling my own Rostock Max to be able to finish the tweaked prints on my own time... With that out of the way, on to the show!

TL;DR
I had originally created a fiberglass + bondo version of this dock/dash kit, only to realize... 3D print this bad boy to the EXACT specs I need. :D

Fiberglassed version for reference:

Now to the 3D printed goodness (a WIP, as was the aforementioned FG version):
V1 was a failure, lessen learned about overhang and other 3D printing concepts I wasn't fully aware of:

V2 was getting there, had to print it in two halves that could be joined by mating pin/hole locations:

All of the versions stacked with the latest on top:

Installed and in its current state:

Where it's at now is waiting on me to port the model from TinkerCAD to a more flexible modeling app, increase the dimensions a bit (my original calculations on the radius of the model were not 100% accurate either), add a slight arch/curve to the fascia profile from north to south, and lastly, I need to test fit the 4-pin POGO board for the charging when the N7 is docked.

I also need to finish the assembly of my Rostock Max and then start printing whatever changed models I get done.

It's been a fun process, I'm really looking forward to learning a new CAD application, and more importantly, REALLY stoked about having my own 3D printer that I've assembled and have a more intimate understanding of its inner workings.

I'll definitely post up more progress pics as I get them done.

Thanks for reading.

That's pretty sweet. What are you using to power the car speakers?

Barry,

I have an aftermarket Alpine headunit behind the tablet, I want to print a shelf/mount for the headunit too. right now i have it sitting level on top of an empty screw/nut container like you'd get from home depot.. The Alpine deck just powers the stock speakers, while the Nexus 7 connects via bluetooth for audio. I'd love to go all digital with an Audison Bit-Ten, but just don't have the cash for something so trivial when I'm using it for back and forth to the work.

That's cool. It's also cool to see someone printing something useful that's not an upgrade to the printer! :D

Metra should release CAD files for all of their install kits so that we can print our own aftermarket dash kits.

How do you like the Nexus? I bought the 2013 model about a month ago. Not too shabby.

Looks like you've done fiberglass work for automotive projects before. Ever build a sub enclosure or custom door panels?

Jimustanguitar,

I agree, it's generally been lots of using the calipers and some tracing and adjustments, etc to get the model done. VW won't give me (understandably so) their cad/dimensions for their double din headunits either :(

Anyway, yeah I enjoy the Nexus 7 (this is the 2012 model with the pogo pins for audio out/power); I've always had a computer or something like that in my cars, and have since then moved to having tablets or other smaller devices for media/nav/etc in the car. It's a fun little hobby, that is only going to increase in enjoyment thanks to affordable 3d printers :)

Here's some pics of the sub enclosure I did in my old car (2002 Nissan Maxima SE): http://www.flickr.com/photos/smesser/sets/1096066/
