Broken bowden mount

Broke the bowden mount on my ORION hotend last night
Went to remove the feed tube to change filament and somehow ended up breaking the blue plastic retainer. It won't hold the tube in anymore.

The good news is that I already have a E3D in the mail to be delivered today.

Just for future reference, what's the best way to prevent breaking these bowden mounts?

The only time I've EVER seen one of those break is when a Steve's Extruder pushed the filament so hard it blew the teeth out of it.

You know you're supposed to push down on the blue ring to release the tube, right?

You may have simply gotten a dodgy one.

I've had about 6 of these break on me so far, but not since I replaced my extruder. For some reason, the stock extruder requires a lot more filament pressure/force to print, and that constant pressure causes those teeth to tear right out eventually.

Replaced the hot-end with an E3D, but now the extruder side just popped out.... *sigh*.
Too bad the bowden mount that came with the E3D won't fit the extruder....

With modifications it probably would fit on the extruder. The ones used by SeemeCNC uses M5 threads and
the E3D ones use 1/8" threads. You can buy the bowden mounts from Filastruder now also, I just bought 6
of them so I can have some spares. They ship immediately but the USPS held them for 2 days before they
decided to ship them. I guess because it the time of the year where they are really busy or it could be they
are the most inefficient shipping Company on the planet. Filastruder is great, they ship the same day or the
next day, highly recommended for anything E3D related.

I had lots of them break pre-E3D - at least 4-5 in 3-4 months - both the stock ones from SeeMe, and replacements from Mcmaster. Granted I'm a heavy user, but still, definitely frustrating to lose a print because of a little $2 part. The ones E3D ships are much better in quality - I've got at least 400 hours on mine and not one has failed yet. You can drill and tap the aluminum piece coming out of the EZstruder to handle the different threading, and I would recommend doing so if you want worry-free printing.

And for the record, it's heavy retracts that kills the connectors

I believe the ones from E3D are 1/8" but I don't know the thread pitch, do you know what tap to use or should I just contact Sanjay?

It's BSPT threading, so it's a little wonky, but here's a link with all the info needed...

Oh, and if you purchase them from Grainger (or anywhere else) - all you need to do is remove the push-connector, and ream out the inside so that the PTFE can slide all the way through

Taylor thanks for the info but Holy Cripes Almighty did you see the prices on just one 1 tap?
Close to $44 for 1 tap. Without shipping added.
So if I understand it correctly I need a 1/8" BSPT tap that costs a freaking fortune.

Also this is a question I have had since I have received the Bowden E3D (have not installed yet) the connector is a hex shaped threaded part that has
no teeth and there is a small top piece that pushes though the top. What actually holds the Bowden tube in place, the upper part that pushes in and
holds via friction with the tube or is it just hope and a prayer?
With the price of a BSPT tap I may decide just to tap my old E3D hotends with a 5mm tap and use the ones that everyone hates (with the teeth)

One more question to add to the list, that grainger link you gave certainly look exactly what E3D uses, have you ordered them to be sure?

I actually found an alternative push fit connector that works similar to the E3D one, except it fits the size of the SMC kind. I too didn't want to drill and tap a new size

For anyone interested, the drill bit needed for tapping with the 1/8" BSPT is 21/64"

I owe you man, thanks for finding that. My heart has now fully recovered and I am ordering that tap today.
All I have to do now is figure out how to drill a straight 21/64" (8.4mm) hole in my 2 old E3D's. The way I shake
the hole will come out looking as straight as a politician. Maybe I can figure out how to mount them in my drill
