Extruder help needed

Post by vpconway »

I've just installed a new EZStruder on my Rostock Max and I appear to still be under extruding. My prints were getting pretty good with the Steve's extruder then I started having trouble with moderate overhangs. As it turned out the extruder was slipping. I installed the new extruder and still have a problem. As first I just went with the default 46.2 steps/mm (Rambo 1.0). When I extrudded 100mm it moved about 90. I've now got it at 58 but my test cube at 95% infill is still rather sparse. I'm running firmware 0.8, Repetier host 0.90C and slic3r 1.0.0RC. I've got the temp at 220. The extrusion width is set to automatic. I've marked the shaft and drive wheel on the extruder - it is not slipping.

I'm stuck. Please help.

The Assembly Guide recommends a starting value of 92.65 steps/mm for the EZStruder. You should then fine-tune from there. Also, I think, in general, having the extrusion width at Auto is not particularly recommended. You might try setting those values to 10% greater than your nozzle size and give it another try.

I have the earlier Rambo board with 1/8 stepping so the default is 92.65/2.

Setting the default and infill widths to 0.55 made a world of difference. I assume you set all the widths to 110% of nozzle size.

That's what I have done right now, set them all to 0.55. I'm pretty happy with the results to date. I'd heard some feedback that Slic3r's Auto setting wasn't all that great and that it was better to set them manually, so I did.

Glad it's working a little better for you. If you really want to tune it, extrude some manually, cut it off when it cools and then measure the diameter with a micrometer and take an average. Remember, it might well change every time you change filament.
