Printing beyond the 150 mm recommendend setting

Post by TFMike »

The ORION quickstart guide says the x and y printable radius settings should be 150mm, what should I do if I want to print something larger? Do I need to make any software or hardware tweaks or simply drop the stl into repetier and print it after slicing?

like...,140 mm across, I know this sounds weird but I have my printable radius at 75, thus a 150mm diameter space, but when I drop it into the repetier preview it sits well outside of the radius onscreen. Is this normal or is my software buggy or what?

Your software is set up improperly, your radius in Repetier is probably wrong.

Or, you are printing a brim that is also outside of the area. double check and either turn it off, or decrease the distance away from the print/laps.

Just checked it twice, seems to be on the correct settings.

1st Check (Repetier)
CONFIG > Printer Settings > Printer Shape
Printer Type: Rostock Printer (circular print shape)
HOME X 0
HOME Y 0
HOME Z Max

Printable Radius: 75mm
Printable Height: 250mm

2nd Check (Slic3r in Repetier)
CONFIGURE > PRINTER SETTINGS
Size and Coordinates

Bed Size
X:150
Y:150

Print Center
X:0
Y:0

Z Offset
0

______________
Here's a pic of what the object looks like on my screen, it was originally 5.43306 mm long but I scaled it up 25.4 in repetier so around 138mm after scale up if my math is correct, no brim or skirt applied yet lol

138 along one axis most likely means that the diagonal of your object is >150. E.g. let's say the *other* side is just 100mm long. Then the length of the diagonal = sqrt(138*138 + 100*100) = ~170. You'll probably find that if you move the object so that long end goes through the center of the circle that it will fit from one side to the other. But obviously the full object doesn't fit on the plate :-(

So I guess my settings are correct, my question remains: how do I print to the edge? Sorta like what this guy did here with the Rostock: http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=3965

Do I need to tweak hardware/software? Add grease anywhere?

It fits on the physical glass boro plate just fine, there is a lot more room to be made use of, provided it doesn't mess anything up on my orion :/

It just doesn't fit on the 3d preview, which to my surprise was actually at the correct setting... so how do I do what mrbi11 did?

Well, you need to start with a circular object or one whose LONGEST dimension (e.g. the diagonal in the picture you showed) is 150mm or less. I haven't printed this (just whipped it up quickly in FreeCAD), but here's an .STL for a 140mm ring (outside diameter) with a 135mm inside diameter. It's 0.9mm high which should work nicely if you print with a 0.3mm first layer height and then 0.2mm layers after that (4 layers total).

That doesn't show me how to print to the edge, down by the binder clips if need be or even if it's possible. Anyone know if the Orion can do an 8 inch diameter circle?

Go to the bottom of the " convince me to buy" thread and read part daddy's reply. It's possible with some stipulation....
