Functional mods for my Rostock Max

Post by Generic Default »

Everything is made out of trimmer line nylon. In the last couple of months, I have printed all of these parts and assemblies and they are currently on my Rostock Max. Unfortunately I don't have a camera (it's 2014) so I can't take pictures of them. So here are the renders of the printed parts. Also notice that I left out the screws and fasteners on most parts because there are multiple sizes of screws that can fit into nylon.

This first one is my hotend platform. It has 2 E3D hotends in it right now. One with the bowden, the other without. Not shown in the picture is a small nylon adapter piece that a PTC connector threads into just above the E3D heat sink input. In the next few months I will be replacing my E3D's with a custom made triple extruder. I plan on selling them over the summer, assuming nothing goes horribly wrong.

This a direct drive extruder I made. It works fine. It mounts to the top of the Rostock in any two of the holes. The spring loaded lever pushes a 608 bearing on the filament.
Eventually I will improve this design to be sealed and airtight for use with the Dry-Draw.

This is an adapter for my old Steve's Extruder. It mounts it upside-down on the top plate of the Rostock so the PTC is facing down towards the print area. This part is pretty big. It works great and I've had reliable extrusion since I made it.

And here is my filament spool holder. I print trimmer line nylon, so I keep it in a large plastic food container for a nice airtight seal. This spinner part sits in the bottom of the container and allows the spool to spin freely. Before I made this, I would constantly get jams when the spool got stuck or something. I have had my 3lb trimmer line spool in the container for about two months now and it's still dry (nylon normal gets saturated within a few days at most). The trimmer line gets pulled out of the container through a small hole that I drilled in the side of the container. I seal the hole with a small piece of electrical tape when not in use.

I like all of those parts. Great job!

Are you sharing the files on Thingiverse, Github, or Repables?

Nah, not on one of those websites. But I might upload them here as attachments if anyone wants them for their own Rostock.

If you're willing, that would be great!

Repables is a smaller community, that's a great place to start if you're open to a sharing website.

OK I just uploaded them in a ZIP folder. I'm not including the direct drive extruder (yet) because the PTC connector doesn't always load the filament as easily as I want it to, and I'm a perfectionist. Once I fix it I'll upload it. If anyone REALLY wants it before then, I'll upload it.

Awesome! What size bearings do you need for that spool holder?

It uses 608 bearings. As far as I know they're the cheapest type. I bought a pack of 30 last year to use on my future projects. They ended up being around 58 cents each.

Thank you for uploading the Zip file.
