Table SubAssembly Screws

Post by Paul Kelley »

I am trying to assemble the table subassembly using 71660 SeeMeCNC H1_1 Table SubAssembly.wmv and the posted assembly video 112312229.mp4. What I can't tell for sure is the type screw used to hold down the nut at 1:28 in the vmv video (the vertical screw with the washer). It appears in the video to be a machine screw but seems that it should be a tapping screw since there is no exit other the other side to attach a nut.

Can anyone help?

For the H1-1, the only nuts used on the table assemblies are the captive locknuts for the adjustment bolts and the table attachment bolts. Everything else is screws. I just built it myself the other day. Don't forget the #4 washers also get used on both sides of each bearing...I was half-done before I realized I'd forgotten those.

Um, the wmv isn't long enough to have a 1:28, so perhaps you meant the mp4? I'd look at it if I knew where it was.

In any case, this video is very helpful. He does the table assembly first, so it's at the beginning.

I looked at the wrong place for the 1:28, that was the entire length. It is at 42 seconds. From the WMV they don't appear to be tapping screws. I can't tell from the http://vimeo.com/47461857 video.

I also referred to the H1 assembly manual but it appears this part has been redesigned for the H1.1.

It's a #4 sheetmetal screw with a #4 washer. You should have plenty of both in the kit.

What about the screws used at 5:16 in the http://vimeo.com/47461857 video. I am using the #6, 1 inch machine screws but they seem difficult to get in. They seem to go in fairly easy in the video. I'm dealing with an injured hand, maybe that's why it seems that way.

Remember that video is 20x normal speed, which makes it look easier than it is.
I recommend using a drill to ream the holes in top half of each clamp, so the screws will pass. It works better when the screws only bite into the bottom half of the clamp.
I put most of those those screws in with a drill-driver with the clutch set to a low number, and only did the final tightening by hand. Saved a lot of wrist action!

I watch the video at reduced speed. I think I will take your advice on reaming the top part.

Yes, all of the blue clamp parts are reamed out so the screw passes easily into and through them without screwing it. Otherwise one would not be able to clamp the two parts together once the thread is set in the blue part.

I didn't show that in the video.
