Just received my kit - Missing Parts turned Build Discussion

Post by atoff »

Just received my kit and began going through the parts checklist. So far I'm missing my thermistors. I've checked all of the packages and they're nowhere to be found. Very bummed. :(

I just finished going through the rest of the checklist and it seems everything else is there. No thermistors, no sleeves for the thermistors. Both resistors are there however, as is the led, and the resistor for the heat bed. Are the thermistors something generic I can pick up from radioshack so I don't have to wait for SeeMeCNC to respond, and wait even more for it to be sent?

edit: Doesn't look like it... I guess it wouldn't matter as I'd need the PTFE sleeves as well. A bit disappointed really.

They don't have them at Radio Shack....

Lots of web sources and some electronic parts stores...

Yeah, I'll have to wait for SMC to get back to me... hopefully soon.

Just went through my kit, same deal, the hotend kit has the hotend, two ptc fittings, some tubing, ptfe tubing, (for filament), and two resistors. No thermistor. The Onyx has a packet with one thermistor, tubing, and an LED. I hope that thermistor still works, it was in a plastic bag, sandwiched between the bed and everything else on top... These things are fragile, right? I would have hoped for more careful packing for that.

Luckily after doing my research I decided on a couple upgrades, one was a threaded thermistor, which arrived last week, so I look to be set in spite of the missing part. Assuming the bed thermistor wasn't damaged...

So long as the glass bead hasn't been smashed, your thermistor probably survived shipping. If no visual damage, you can test it by measuring it's resistance. It should be close to 100KΩ (won't be exact unless your ambient temp happens to be 25C).

Mind sharing a link to the threaded thermistor you purchased? Also, how does it fit into the hot end? The hole in the hot end doesn't appear to be threaded.

I found it mentioned in several forum threads, some here I think. You would need to get an m3 tap and thread the hot end.

Well that looks perfect, thanks! I could have saved myself about $20 by just purchasing that rather than the separate JST connectors, the 10 thermistors, and PTFE tubing I just ordered!

Other parts I decided to 'upgrade' pre build, based on issues I've been reading about...

The threaded thermistor listed above
micro deans connectors (rated 10 amps) instead of JST, which are only rated 2 amps.
500 watt power supply with a 34 amp +12v rail.
Higher speed SD card
Stepper motor dampers (not to fix potential issues, but does make the machine quieter)

Not everyone has had issues with the stock components, but there are numerous threads of folks fixing various issues by upgrading the above parts...

Thanks... I plan on ordering a 24V supply at some point (already bidding on one), have a higher speed SD card, so good to go there, but very interested in anything that would make it quieter.

Are these the dampers you purchased? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stepper-Motor-D ... 4ad1b19c11

Check with a user called astroboy907, he may have a set of dampers that he was selling. Click on the user icon on top which members then find him in the list click his name and there should
be an option to send him a PM.

Will do, thanks, I believe I know which dampers you're referring to now.

Why on earth would you use a 10A rated connector for a fan that *stalled* probably doesn't pull 800mA?

He wanted plenty of overhead. Besides, the connector is not that large, some say easier to connect and the choice of connectors is a highly personal decision which is fine as long as they choose
one that will handle at least the rated current, as my wife used to say, better to be to big then too small :)

@Whaleboy or Eaglezsoar - So, for the dampers, would I only need 3? I found them on Ebay for $8 a piece. I also found a set of 5 stepper motors with the dampers - used for $45 shipped. Would it be better to get 3 new for $26.32 shipped (assuming I only need 3), or the 5 motors + dampers used? I'd imagine the rubber in the dampers wears out, so used may not be so great, but not really sure.

Yes, the rubber can go bad over time just like a tire can "dry rot" If they were outside they would go bad quicker because of the ultraviolet light but indoors they are exposed to the air which has traces
of chemicals in it that can deteriorate rubber. If you have the choice, I would go with the new. And you only need three, the extruder doesn't really need one.

Check out Trick Laser. They also sell insulators/dampeners with longer screws and washers included.

Those are not dampers by any means, they do not isolate the motor from the mounting plate as a true damper does.

Word of warning about replacing the PSU, some ATX PSU's (often the better ones) require a significant load on the 5V line before they will deliver a consistent 12V.
If I were replacing the PSU, I wouldn't swap it for another ATX PSU.

Perfect, went ahead and ordered the 3. Now I'll sit on my hands for several days! :D In the mean time, waiting on thermistors, will look into the SSR, will look for bolts to mount the dampers, aaand somewhere in there get some work done so I can make a bit of my money back on all I've spent so far.

I see now, i compared Astroboys(PM'd) to the tricklaser ones (Already Ordered)

Would you know how much of a noise difference would be in the two?

In other words is it worth just biting the bullet and ordering another set through astroboy in your opinion?

These are the ones I ordered. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEMA-16-17-Step ... 1158026166
They're the same as what Astroboy is selling (Astrosyn Dampers)... figured I'd get it faster if I just ordered from Ebay. Says I'll get them on or before Sat (12th).

Will need to pick up some mounting bolts, and some washers. Still trying to figure out which, and how many.

edit: 12 M3 5-0.5 screws, 12 M3 washers... according to 626Pilot, here http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... 5&start=50.
