simple old style diagonal arm fix

It turns out the sturdy stakes (metal tube stakes from the gardening center) fit perfectly over the old style diagonal arms. If you break one and have no spares, you could possibly break the others and slide these over them and glue them in on. Optionally, you could chop all but a couple of inches off of each end of the diagonal arm. You will need some length to squeeze into the tube after all.

Hey, you guys might have spare parts on hand. This is a quick fix to get a person printing again until replacement parts come.

By the way, See Me CNC no longer lists the old diagonal arms on the store, so the replacements would be $24 and having to redo all 6 arms.

I have a length of about 1.5 inches of that sturdy stake on the one arm as a stop gap fix. I am currently printing a dual extruder mount.

I will probably be switching to Traxxas rod ends, but I bought the wrong part number. oops.

Paying $24 plus shipping and tax for new diagonal arms that I am not going to use after a week.....that would be crazy.

The mesh surely needs a little bit of cleaning up. I am a newb at designing stuff and it was a bit of a hack job.

Print some of these out and cut up some "sturdy stakes" from Lowes or some other place. Place the sturdy stake into the hole. If you do not cut it to the right length, you will need to adjust the firmware for the "radius" till your printer does not have the printing plane bend up or down in the middle of the print bed vs the outside of the print bed. Good luck there.

Be warned that I am an extreme newb at designing parts and the STL file may be bad for your slicer and/or printer. I will try to fix that later. Help from someone more skilled would be appreciated.

These sturdy stake based arms should be alot sturdier than the original arms. Be careful not to bend the axles though or you may need to get some more axles. If that happens, maybe the 1/8"x6" (3.2mmx152.4mm) aluminum round bar (item 884465 from Lowes may work after sticking it in a drill/dremel and using sand paper on it.

By propping up the arm and not remembering to remove the prop before doing calibration tests. It was late. I was tired.

V2 of my rod ends are based on the printable rods from SeeMeCNC and some of my own SCAD work.

Well, that figures. The SeeMeCNC metal u-joints may be a bit bigger than the ones that most use. I have to replace the STL file from the SeeMeCNC github with some SCAD work. On the plus side, I will get to make V3 print better and have more pliable u-joint grippers.

I also under-estimated the amount of the material that was shaved off when I shoved the arm into the sturdy stake.

V3 is from pure SCAD. Since I went this far into SCAD land, I will now be able to adjust this for whatever dimensions I want. I still have to print and fit test this, but here are the files.

The fit for the sturdy stakes is pretty good in V3.0. The prongs are a little close together though. I made revision 3.1 to make the peg a little thicker and spread the prongs a little bit apart. A little bit of filing and V3.0 works ok. I may give an update later when I print V3.1.

I like the idea, resourceful and clever. Using what you have easily available is a good thing.

0.8oz for my diagonal rod assembly before gorrilla glue.

0.3oz for the Original (the new sturdier version is surely heavier) SeeMeCNC diagonal rod.

I could probably trim some weight off by removing the plastic from the outside of the sturdy stake and spray painting it black.

The stakes cost about $5 total. The effort is for a hobby. If having a hobby is insane, I guess I am a nut. I have provided something valuable to others. If everyone thought doing work that could be avoided, there would be no opensource movement at all. My life frankly gets so damned boring when I do not have a project to do. It was a good project.

By the way, if SeeMeCNC wishes to copy and use my SCAD file for helping him design the next set of arms, he can feel free. I just want some credit for it if he does.

The diagonal arms are all assembled and drying before installation.

The rods are on. It is different putting them on when there is no flex, but not too hard. I had to put some rubber bands on because the U-Joints have some wiggle room side to side. It is not totally perfect, but I am pleased. I will be doing calibration sometime tonight or next week. My next prints will probably be a few more rod ends just to have spares, but I am sure the axle will die before the diagonal arms do. My friend reminded me of sacrificial points of failure and now that seems to be the axle for which my only local replacement is aluminum hobby rods from Lowes.
