Opinion on something that might ultimately help this forum.

Post by JohnStack »

Question:

If you were writing software that made it really easy to create FAQs from entries in user forums, would you call the company (or site):

Answerfaq.com
or
Accufaq.com

I'd call it "ralphie" and be done with it. This would be a great application though and something that's been on my mind off and on for a decade or longer. I've spent a fair amount of my career in high tech specializing in realtime and asynchronous collaboration and social media. The transition to and from forum posts, emails, blogs and wikis and ultimately to something a little more organized and "permanent" like an FAQ or document (specification, final design doc, etc) is something I've given considerable thought to. I thought Google was on the right path a few years ago with Wave but alas it failed. So, I'd call it ralphie.

A ralphie is a scruffy school child - much like a forum is a scruffy FAQ.

I laughed pretty good at Demolishun and McSlappys suggestions. I also liked how nobody answered JohnStacks question at all.

I'm also a fan of Faqtory. It reminded me of a place I worked right by a few years ago...

OK, to answer John's question - neither. Perhaps this is an opinion formed with the benefit of seeing some of the other suggestions, but neither of them is particularly memorable or associates strongly with any of the target market. Might as well make it John Stacks Software.

Was Ralphie a character from Happy Days too? I know Ralphie was the kid that got to get beat for the main character swearing in A Christmas Story.

The reason I threw out names was because when searching for a domain name everything is already taken it seems. So having some choices in getting a domain name helps. Also, the original names did not "grab" my attention. I also thought it was fun to make some fun names.

I dunno know. Ultimately the domain name really does not matter if the concept is good. You can always change the domain name later if needed too.

Yeah domain names are kind of relevant / irrelevant. Get one that's catchy and memorable and you're done.

Ralphie is good and as relevant as any, but I doubt it's available.

Why not combine John's name and make it:

Thanks all!

Lots of good suggestions!

I also registered PopFaq... I'm so surprised that such a short domain name is available. Someone suggested Faqattack - which would have bene fun as well.

Dev has started. Over the weekend, I built a Chrome Extension similar to what Evernote does. I handed requirements over to my devs as well.

(I need figure out why I start new projects on national holidays. My wife hates it!)

@Eaglesoar, I do take a few off but probably not many. I work on things I love; therefore, I love to work!

I think there is some logic somewhere in there, if what you do makes you happy then all is well.
