Codename: DropLit

Post by johnoly99 »

Meet DropLit, our little shop project for a projector based resin printer. We've been talking about finally doing something with it for a long time now, since last year really. And thanks to the help of having JJ here now full time, and the rest of the new members at SeeMeCNC, we've been able to start developing it a bit more. The initial specs are going to be:

Build area of appx. 3 1/2" diameter with around 7-8" of build height
Uses standard PC projectors readily available as the UV source, with a little modification
Uses common Open Source Hardware designs, prob. a modified version of our cheapskate for the Z axis, and Arduino based electronics with either reprap derivative or grbl firmware (prototypes using grblshield on an UNO R3)
Lasercut melamine and a few injection molded parts, and CNC machined parts, as always :)
Affordable kit price, and readily available parts/materials
Right now, using http://envisionlabs.net Creation Workshop software for control/slicing

We have seen over the last few years how fast the tech can evolve when a really great community gets behind it and digs in. Look at RepRap! I also think that we've grown one of the most amazing and ingenious communities out there ourselves, albeit more focused on our specific hardware, but you guys still come up with solutions to about any problem. We'd like to be a part of yet another technology around 3D printing that we think we can contribute to greatly. Resin based printing isn't new, but it isn't as adopted yet, for many reasons. If we can put together kits for guys who like to tinker and experiment, just like we have done with FFF and especially Delta Printers, I think you guys here will have a blast learning and evolving the tech faster than ever. That said, Meet our first prototype, we call it DropLit :)

Are you sure you want to leave an opening for the competition to call it "DerpLit"?

The RepRap teardrop logo (http://reprap.org/wiki/RepRapLogo) is the "o" and the reprap font is used. Reprap usually implies open source.

John, very exciting! Can you tell us more?

Timeline?
How you envision this getting rolled out?
Rough cost?
Criterial for beta testing?

Sign me up regardless of course. (Please!)

Feels like a bit too much, overload might be the right word. That's entirely personal though.

Interesting "Tilt Mechanism" for releasing prints from the vat via the M-One Kickstarter

You have to use the SeeMe eyes somewhere before I'll let you use that logo :)
What about using them to dot the i or as the holes in the R and P?
Then incorporate the RepRap drops as whichever one is left over.

BTW, is it said with a long I? (i.e. droplet vs drop-light)

I suggested a logo contest, nobody from the company had chimed in on that yet, so I didn't know any better.

Sorry for the confusion.

You WILL need peel. There's no if's, and's, or but's about it. Every single resin printer project out there as it for a reason. ;)

Looks like a nice printer! I was hoping you guys would expand your product line into resin printers. I'm guessing that the expensive part will be the projector and the resin (for now). The software will be completely different, since it has to make images from sliced cross sections instead of trace paths.

There's many choices for the projector and it's a one-time cost. The real question, at least for hobbyist purposes, is the cost of consumables.
