Onyx won't heat more than 65º

Post by fredini »

Hi all,
I'm an original Rostock Max backer on Indiegogo- After 3 months of messing with it way back then, I was unable to get a decent print and gave up on my poor max until last month when I swore I would get it working. Its close... o so close, but not quite... Any advice on getting the Onyx board hotter are appreciated!

About the machine:
I've upgraded to the EZStruder, I also updated the firmware to 0.91 and added the Onyx (r2 version I had bought a while back). After numerous print tests and utter failures with PLA clogging the extruder (I usually print ABS), I finally replaced the extruder with an E3D-V6 hotend. The machine is now printing great. I love this new hotend!

Outstanding issue: Onyx (r2) won't heat more than 65º
The only remaining issue is that I cannot get the Onyx build plate to heat higher than 65º. In fact, while the extruder is heating, I can't get it higher than 60º. I see here ( http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=3847 ) , people are talking about subbing in a 24v power supply. I'd really prefer not to send any more money on this thing and I'm nervous about running 24v through the board. I also hate to add a second dedicated supply unless I absolutely have to.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

Have you checked the voltage drop on the 12VDC PS Output when it comes under full load? Just may not have enought posterior.

Sorry, I'm not so electrically savvy, but I do have a voltmeter to measure with- what would i be checking exactly?

Carefully using a Volt-Ohm Meter touch the leads to the black and yellow wires attached to the Rambo card. For this polarity does not matter but generally the red to the yellow and the black to the black. Set the VOM to a scale suitable to measure 12VDC - something like 20volts max scale. With the Rambo on but nothing running record the voltage. Now start the Hot End and the Heated Bed and repeat the measurement. Ideally there should be very little change, a big change usually indicates that the p/s is struggling with the load.

Throw a pot holder or towel over it while it heats.
