Rostock is working

Post by slausonm »

Hello! I'm Matt Slauson,

The Excitement I felt when I build my first CNC machine is back!!!! I saw the new Rostock machine at the NYC makers faire and thought it was the coolest and most affordable kit at the Faire. Since I lived in Elkhart at one time of my life I could appreciate the story the guys from Goshen told me about there business. I participated in the Indiegogo funding and was glad I did. I teach Engineering classes to pretty high achieving high school students. We spent about 2 weeks of 40 minute class periods putting the kit together. I divided the class into people working on mechanics, electronics and software. We finally got the machine working today, and I must say the print came out much better than I expected for a trial run. We have some things to neaten up and re-calibrate, but essentially it is done!

Our first major project we will be doing is to print control knobs for the Electric Mandolins we build in my manufacturing class. I figure each student can design there own knobs and print them...since rapid prototyping is part of our curriculum :)

Here's a link to our first 3D print http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/0803/ ... 20Printer/
Here's a link to our mandolin mass production. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/0803/ ... n_2012_13/

Times have changed a great deal for Cnc and rp in the past 20 years. When I first got interested it was pretty tough to piece together and make the parts for a Cnc machine. Now there is tons of cool stuff out there! You should see the kids when the Rostock started moving. Awesome!
