Just wondering about the amount of tightness the cheapskate and belt as supposed to have against the aluminium towers. I know the belts are meant to have the firmness of your palm below the thumb, but when im moving the units with the belts tightened, they seem a bit grippy when moving up and down.

The motor will keep them feeling a bit grippy, this what what you mean? Even if the belts are really loose it'll feel a bit resistant.
I loved my Rostock so much I now sell them in Oz
