Need Help With Calibration
Hello Everyone,
I finally finished assembling my rostock max v2 but I am having trouble getting my abs prints to work. I went through the calibration process twice and got it to the point where when running each of the scripts 1-3 there is a good amount of resistance to pulling the sheet of paper out. When running script 4 it also is pretty close. The problem I am having is that when I import a model and slice it with slicer and then print it. The hotend always seems to come down very fast and bounce a little off the hotbed causing the nozzle to end up slightly higher that it should. This causes the first layer to not stick because the gap is too large. Another problem I am seeing is that no filament is extruded until the 3-5 seconds into the print at which point for some prints the head has already moved on to layer 2 /3 and is way to high off the bed so again no sticking.
I was able to print the fan shroud but since then I cannot get the first layer to be close enough to the hotbed. On the fan shroud I had problems with the layers not sticking very well together and some issues with some of the pointier edges as seen in the photos below.
In short:
1. Calibration seems to go well, then nozzle bounces off glass bed when starting print causing too high of first layer.
2. Filament does start extruding until several seconds into the build
3. One successful build had some messed up areas and the layers didn't stick too well together.

First you need to fix issue #1. I would focus on homing and then running "G0 Z0 F2500" from the G-Code line in repetier. Use a piece of paper. If it is too snug or bounces, then you need to shorten your max Z length. If it is fine but still doing it with a sliced gcode file, you need to change the speed setting in the slicer to slow down rapid movements. Based on your #2 issue I'm guessing you are using Slic3r? I've struggled with that problem in Slic3r and finally gave up on it.
One way to combat that is to extrude a bit into air before starting the print and clean off the nozzle. Then start - that ensures the system is primed. I observed that Slic3r does some silly retract when starting the print and that's what causes this problem. It might be configurable but between this and constant crashing of the 1.0 release on OSX I moved on.

Thanks for the response. I have done the calibration and gotten it to where all 4 scripts put the hotend at the correct height over the hotbed. The problem only seems to manifest itself when actually starting a print. I am using slic3r and will have to look to see where the speed settings is. Do you have a recommendation for another slicing program. The main reason I am using slic3r is because seemecnc has the configuration files for it and I wouldn't know how to configure another slicer just yet.

I'm a KISSlicer fan and I've posted config files for it in the KISSslicer sub forum here.
On Kiss, I think you want Print Settings->Speed - there is a "Travel" for non print moves. Mine is set to 200mm/s
But unless your Z is moving REALLY fast, it should stop right on the button. If it doesn't then something is amiss. In Slic3rl, what do you have your first layer height set to?

I will have to check on the first layer height. Sadly I will be gone until Sunday but I will check when I get home. I did just download the slic3c config provided by seemecnc and it has the following value:
first_layer_height = .35
If that is what you are talking about then that is what mine is set to as I haven't changed any of the defaults.

Ok, I am back from my trip and even more frustrated. I spent another few hours recallibrating the printer from the start several times and I still am unable to get a print to work. I was able to get the hotend to stop bouncing off the hotbed by slowing down the non-print speed in slic3r and reducing the horizontal radius quite a lot. Now the problems I am having are:
1. Even after priming the hotend and extruding about 10mm when the print starts it takes a few seconds before filament starts being extruded so the first part of the print never gets laid down. This often means the printer finishes the first layer without actually laying down anything.
2. Can't get the abs to stick, even with the elmers glue.
Would love some tips!

Nothing pops out in the eeprom config. I'm not sure what you mean by "stock" slicer settings? That seems problematic.

If your nozzle is bouncing off the glass when it hits Z0, is it possible you still have slack in your tower belts?
If at first you don't succeed, you're doing something wrong. Try again, and if it fails again, try once more. Through trial and error, one can be the first to accomplish something great.

I was able to stop the bouncing but now it seems that when I run script 4 things are pretty good the nozzle is pretty close the bed. When I do an actual print though it seems to not be as close and the filament doesn't come out of the hot end until a few seconds into a print. Also having problem with the first layer sticking when the filament finally does decide to come out.

Sounds normal.
When I prime the nozzle before the print (by manually extruding a bit), if I don't start the print immediately, the filament in the hot end continues to extrude and I end up with a few cm of dry print. The skirt fixes that.
Running the extrusion at 120-130% for the first layer helps the adhesion, by really smooshing plastic into the bed. Purple vanishing gluestick helps that initial adhesion a lot, too.

I did another round of calibration and used hairspray instead of the glue and it is now sticking pretty well. I also didn't realize that an outer row or two of filament is printed first just to get things going. I still have a problem with smaller prints where the skirt isn't large enough for the nozzle to get the filament going. Not sure if there is a setting to make a larger skirt regardless of the size of the print.
I tried to do a large bridge test and as you can see that failed miserably. I then printed another calibration test. This one worked better but had trouble bridging even small gaps and the top square where the movement was the smallest was very wavy. Here I tried to print a calibration pyramid. As you can see it is very messy. Not sure how to clean it up any suggestions would be awesome. I printed it with the hotend at 135C. Any tips for making this prints better would be awesome!

You're probably printing too fast with the pyramid and the layers aren't cooling enough before the next one is laid on. As for the bridging, I use a bridging multiplier of .75 in slicer, but I have also found that sometimes the bridging problems are actually slicing problems, when I do the cube it will often not fully bridge that inner section of the bottom cutout due to the slicing being weird because of the small shell you get in that corner near the edge.

Another question. I just tried to follow the guide linked below to calibrate the extruder and have found that my numbers are way off. When I clicked the button to extrude 100 in repetier only 50 appears to be extruded. It also seems like the extruder is slipping here and there. Should I be of by 50 mm?

Check your extruder gear. It may be gunked up.

I'm not sure what your bouncing problem is.
But, to fix the first few seconds of no-print, I use a skirt around the part. I just do one line of skirt and it usually starts printing in the first 2-3 inches.

Is the skirt something that is added by the slicer or is that something that has to be built into the model?

You have to check the box in Slicer to set it up. I forget what tab it is on, but it is called Skirt.
