Poor extrusion

Post by Holy1 »

I had a strange problem a few days after powering up my Max V2. It printed the fan and peek fan holder in ABS wonderfully. I also did some smaller pla prints that worked out good. However, once I tried a larger print in ABS with lots of infill it printed the walls great but the infill was a mess. Kind of brittle and thin. The same model printed great in PLA with good infill. The temps were appropriate for each filament. So I checked the estep, nozzle, extruder alignment all the good stuff that can cause poor infill. I looked at the hobbed gear and thought the grooves looked shallow. I got another hobbed and compared and this is what I found
Hobbed Gear. #1 is good. #2 is bad
Hobbed Gear. #1 is good. #2 is bad
. There was a machining error on the hobbed gear that came with the kit. It would print walls but couldn't push enough filament needed for the infill. The hobbed gear gripped PLA because it is a harder plastic and was stripping on the softer ABS. Easy fix once I figured it out.

Hope this helps anyone who is building a kit and runs into strange extrusion problems. Sometimes problems lie in the mechanical not in the software.
