Sound deadening material

Post by Aurora900 »

I'm wondering if instead of installing dampers on the motors, how effective sound deadening material like dynamat (what you would use in a car to reduce vibrations from a sub woofer) would be. I figure most of the sound is generated from the vibrations resonating in the wood... and this is specifically supposed to prevent materials from resonating...

I figure I could put a couple small pieces on each tower support. Anyone think this will be effective? Obviously the best choice would likely be the dampers, but for someone who wants a quick fix to an existing setup without having to tare the rostock apart, I wonder if this would be worth while. I already have the dynamat on hand, so it wouldn't even cost me anything to do. And if no one has tried this, then I'll be the guinea pig :P

Do it!
I've also heard of a few people putting sorbothane pads on the bottom of the printer to help reduce vibrations there.

I have the dampers on my motors and the pads under the base.

You shouldn't have to take the whole printer apart to install the dampers. I would highly recommend them also, they make the printer much quieter.

Wouldn't I have to unmount the motors? And they're mounted from the inside of the tower supports... there's no way you could get to the screws without taking the whole base apart, as far as I can tell.

There are holes in the frame to access all 4 screws that hold the motor in place. Undo those, pull the motor off, install the dampers and reinstall it.

Oh, good to know! I haven't looked that closely at it :P

I might actually order some of the astrosyn dampers then.... lol

If you are planning on buying from me I only have 1 set left and Astrosyn said they were out of stock until the end of october. But TriD printing also has them if I run out :)

I'm going to hold off and see how much noise this thing actually makes first :P

I have my machine in the house, one room away from where I watch TV. If I installed dampeners, I would never know when the machine shut off. A little noise is OK for where I have mine.

Mine will temporarily be living in my bedroom until I have a chance to move it to my boyfriends place. We're probably going to be keeping it in our bedroom there as well, so I might want it to be quieter. Though the bedroom is pretty far from everything else and while it's running most of the time no one will be in the bedroom. If we put it in the living room I might also want the dampers because that's where most of us are most of the time...

In the bedroom you would want some sound dampening. Before ours got moved to our walk in closet room, it resided in the living room. And when doing a 40 hour print you end up being in its proximity. It is ok for a day or two but the novelty wears off quickly and it becomes a nuisance.

Ps. Walk in closet is just a room that has such a crappy desing that you can only fit in 2 cupboards. Not a place you can observe the printer and fiddle with it.I am currently researching a 50cm x 50cm cupboard or similar from ikea so i can move my toy back to the living room.
When on mobile I am brief and may be perceived as an arsl.

Those AstroSyn dampers are definitely the best value for an upgrade i've done for a long time. I didn't think it was *that loud, until I installed the dampers. The main source of noise is now the extruder, which is pretty minimal.

Agreed.

My Max was on the verge of banishment to the shed because of the noise - even during the day or evening.

Now? I can print overnight just with the study door closed and us in the bedroom opposite.

Still, don't think I'd run it in the bedroom if I was asleep. Not only the noise but the fumes.

Your avatar is very appropriate for that comment :P (sounds like something the professor would say, probably while in a completely smoke filled room lol)

420 Blaze it, I mean, uh, what?

But seriously I don't like them ABS fumes. All my PLA smells like sweet stuff, and the Nylon smells like dusty old attics. Mmmmmmm, gotta love that Nylon :P

Back on topic, when I was using my Ultimaker it was LOUD. I got some dampers, and it wasn't loud. They really do work quite well. I only have 2 installed on my MAX, but I think thats enough to sleep with it printing (if the extruder motor wasn't so loud on retracts :/).

Yeah, I'm going to try some dynamat first and see what happens... experimenting is fun anyways :P

Yes the attractive smell is one of the perks to PLA ;)

I'm sure someone in one of the new 'green' states or the Netherlands is working on 3d printing marijuana so I imagine the first 3d printed blunt to come out soon.

How thick is that Dynamat stuff?
I loved my Rostock so much I now sell them in Oz :)

It's pretty thin, but impressively good at reducing vibration. You need a lot less than you think to deaden a car... only a few square inches in a couple places is enough. I can grab it from my car tomorrow and measure the thickness with my calipers if you want an actual measurement

You should be able to find some at TriDPrinting.
