Strengthening parts with epoxy resin

Post by jeffhuber »

Curious whether you guys have tried soaking your parts in epoxy resin? I'm also curious what materials this works for (perhaps all). The example below is for ABS, but does it work for PLA, nylon, PC, etc?

Here is more information about the process
7 Steps to a Stronger ABS part with Epoxy Penetrating Sealing And Coating Resin System
Use this 2 Part Epoxy Coating to achieve a stronger ABS part.
TC-1614 A/B is an unfilled high solids content epoxy resin system. It is designed to seal porous to semi-porous substrates developing remarkable strength. As the penetrative depth increases the TC-1614 A/B also has exceptional adhesive characteristics and is capable of continued use at temperatures up to 350°F. It can be used at temperatures up to 400°F intermittently.
Popular infiltrant sealer for FDM parts and other 3D printed technologies.
Goal: Strengthen ABS part and give it a glossy finish.

The use of the epoxy sounds like a great idea!
I especially like the idea of using it to add shine to the parts and strengthen them as well.
Thanks for the tips!
