First print problems

Post by TomS »

Hello all

I have recently completed a Max V2 build and started printing. Unfortunately I have not been able to successfully print the Peek fan shroud, it keeps coming loose from the bed with about 10 rows to go in the print. The last photo below is a couple of the prints that have failed. There appears to be a build up of excess ABS at the end of the overhang on the top left of each one. I think the print head is hitting this and causing the problem but am certainly no expert. Any ideas would be appreciated. The next photo is of the hot end and nozzle. I am getting a build up of a black material that is very hard when cold. I am using natural ABS and cannot see anything in the visible filament, it is a generic ABS probably from China. Is this type of accumulation normal? Any ideas about it? The first picture is a test block that I tried just to see if I really could print anything and I thought the results were actually pretty good for a first successful print.

Any ideas or comments would be appreciated.

Double check your Z height calibration. What bed temperature are you using? What are you using on the bed to promote adhesion? Double check your Z height.

I had the same problem until I used the Elmers purple glue stick.

Maybe you can slow down your printspeed. Specially on Overhangs and short Layertime the filament has not enough time to cool and it is too soft when the next layer is printed.
I´m printing these big Overhangs mostly with support structure and a skirt around the part to keep it up to bed temperature. This avoids most up bending due to the shrinkage of the ABS. Printing most Parts with 0.075 - 0.10 Layerhight with a 0.3 Nozzle and very low speed down to 20mm/s.

Give it a try to slow down your speed first to extend the the Layertime. Most Slicers you can put a min Layertime, so the printer is reducing the speed automatically. Not the best Idea, because you will see it on the part when speed is changed, but for troubleshooting it maybe helps.

cheers

Thanks for the ideas.

I have been using the ABS settings downloaded from SeeMe for these prints, no modifications. Bed temperature has been 90.

For adhesion I have tried knock off Kapton tape, 3M Glue Stick that rubs on purple, dries clear, and finally PVA glue watered down. The only one that has worked at all, the one successful print, has been the PVA glue. Unfortunately I cannot find a lot of brand name products here in Indonesia, import duties are extremely high to protect local goods.
