Hotend not reaching temperature

Hello All,

My Orion is having a hard time reaching 220. It is sitting at around 200. I am not sure what it could be but I did recently have a jam that I cleared. Is it possible that something came loose?

I was also looking into getting another hot end. One that was suggested was the E3D-V6. I am not sure what the differences are between the Bowden and non-Bowden hot ends. I assume that I would also go with a 1.75 mm nozzle instead of the 3mm nozzle.

Any suggestions?

Did it used to get up to 220? Could be that the peek fan is cooling the metal barrel too much and you can wrap the barrel with kapton tape. Is the layer fan blowing on the hotend while it is warming up?

What you have now is a Bowden tube style hotend, A none bowden tube style hotend has the filament drive motor assembly on the carriage, or effector plate, not remotely placed like on the Rostocks. Another possible problem is that your heaters (resistors) are loose, or possibly one is blown?

I believe the fan is always on above a certain temperature. I can generally hear it when it's running.


I noticed that if I move some of the components on the hot end (4 Resistors, 1 Thermistor?), the temperature fluctuates. I was able to get it to around 220 by doing this, but it drops while running.

If I were to buy the new Hotend, would I need any additional hardware to mount it to the Orion?

If your hot end isn't getting all the way up to the 220-225 range, you may have a heating resistor that's blown out.

Check the resistance of each resistor separately and make sure they're still functioning properly...

Make sure you do this with the printer turned off, and tell us your findings

Did your thermistor come loose? Sounds like if it used to work until you cleared your jam, you might've nudged it out of intimate contact with the extruder.
