PEEK Fan Shroud Overhang Curling

Post by mpyr6 »

I am trying to print the PEEK Fan Shroud and overall 90% of the print is coming out AMAZING. :D The biggest issue I am having is that once the print gets about 21mm from the print bed the overhang begins to curl upward and the hot end hits the curl and pushes the print out of place. This occurred while I was printing last night around 11PM and I will estimate it was ~50 degrees Fahrenheit outside. I had the door open on the other side of the apartment trying to purge some of the ABS smell. Here is a picture of what the print looks like. It is the left front overhang that the hot end snags on. Thanks for any help!

EDIT: I was on Reddit/r/fixmyprint and it was recommended to "Since you've got a rostock, take advantage of the speed and set your z-lift to 1mm, fixes those snags on curling filament ;)." Would this be a solution or a quick fix?

Slow the print down a bit. The issue you're hitting is that the ABS isn't getting enough time to cool, so it curls up like that from being unable to dump the heat it's accumulated.

I agree with Gene in slowing down the print and this is one of those rare times that ABS could benefit from a layer fan.

Thanks guys I will keep that in mind for future prints. I ended up just turning on supports and flipping it upside down. It worked well enough to use the shroud.

Glad to hear that. Supports will vary depending on the Slicer you use so you may have to experiment with the different slicers.
