Gaps in first layer

Post by Kitecraft »

Hello.
This doesn't seem quite right to me. I'm expecting the beads to be touching on the first layer, but I can't get them to. Messing with widths and extruder multipliers don't seem to really help.
Does this look right? And if not, any suggestions on how to improve this? Everything else about the printing seems great.

Thanks for any advice.
Cheers

Are you printing with rraft?

Try calibrating your extruder. Youtube doodaddoes.

Also did you change the multiplier on the lcd or software?

Is it same on the whole surface?

Is your nozzle width set to correctly?

It looks like you have your slicer set to print a skirt around your print.
The skirt does not normally touch the print, it is used to prime the hotend
before the print starts.

A brim is used to help keep the print from curling and it does touch the print.

EDIT - I agree with Teoman above.
If your nozzle is .4 then set it to .45 in your slicer.
If your nozzle is .5 then set it to .55 in your slicer.

Measure your filament width and make sure it's set correctly in your slicer.

Using MatterControl and MatterSlicer.
I've changed the multiplier in the MC software only

The perimeters seem to be very good and any changes I make just mess up the perimeters and make small negative space horrible.
I'll try changing the nozzle size setting and see what effect that has. That's one thing I've yet to try. Thanks!

MatterControl is not working well when I try to use the manual extruder controls. @ 10mm, I can click the button 3, maybe 4 times before all manual controls stop working. MC requires restart.
@100mm, it seems to try to stuff all 100mm into the hot-end as fast as it can causing the extruder to chew into the filament. So, I've been unable to try the extruder steps-per-mm calibration. :(

Check your z height in that area of the bed?

You have pull the filament all the way out. Then calibrate.

Did you checkout the video?

Well I still haven't figured out which setting it was that I screwed up, but after going back to the default PLA profile, the first layer is good again. Sure all the other problems are back too but at least I have a starting point again. This time though, I have more knowledge for the fine-tuning phase :)

It is mostly a learning process. It seems that you fix one thing and something else comes up.
I love the sellers of printers who try to get you to believe that 3D printing is plug and play.
We know better! :D
