MakerHive Dan suggested this program for Mac:

Not sure about a good windows solution though.

Jim, I have been hunting also and have not found anything yet.
I did download and try " 3D-Tool" http://www.3d-tool.com/en_free-viewer-download.htm
Nice powerful program for anal-izing .stl files.
I like it! staying on my system. ...does not provide stl thumbnails in win file explorer though.

This one works pretty well, pretty lightweight. Not sure what you want in options?

Re: Windows Explorer STL Preview?
What I'm looking for is a program that will turn STL file icons into little pictures of the STL file that I can see when I'm in in a folder. Like how you have thumbnails of pictures and videos, but for 3D models.
Sorry, I didn't state that very clearly in the original post.

Windows has a new program to deal with 3D printing... I forget its name...
Oh look I remember! (thanks google ^.^)
http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-au ... 590d5781f2
Might not be what your looking in terms of a preview, but it might be worth a look into.

Re: Windows Explorer STL Preview?
I installed that thinking the same thing. Doesn't have that functionality.
It does have model repair like NetFabb though. I suspect that it is NetFabb because their cloud service says Microsoft all over it now.

Thumbnailer plugin would be awesome, icons display as models...

If your using Windows 8.1 This app may be what your looking for. I use it to view .stl files. I don't have the .stl files associated to the app, so I can't say if it generates a preview.

I think you have to download it from the Microsoft Store.Eaglezsoar wrote:I went to your posted link and see no way to download 3D Builder. Can you help?craftymethod wrote:Windows has a new program to deal with 3D printing... I forget its name...
