Pid auto Tune

Hi,

I installed a screw in thermister when I did the original build a few months ago. The thermistor has failed and I am replacing it. Will I have to run the Pid Auto tune again?

Yes. While the tuning is mainly to dial in the control for the heating element, it's all part of one system. Every thermistor is different and my opinion is that if you change one component of the heating or feedback circuit, you really ought to 'rebalance' the whole system for optimum performance and accuracy.

And it's so easy to do that there's really no reason not to.


If you calibrated your original thermistor with a thermocouple, definitely do that again.

I did not use a thermocouple the first time. I have one but I am not sure how to adjust the values. Is thera a topic on it? I looked but nothing seems current.

Maybe I'm just crazy, but I do a PID auto tune every time I go from PLA to ABS, vice verse, or even if I make a radical colour change from light to dark.

yeah your crazy :p

I do mine if I make any significant change to the hotend, I get less than 1C variation on all the filaments I regularly print with, but I also tweak the autotune values by hand to get there.
