Damper audio comparison...

Post by geneb »

I got the Astrosyn dampers installed on White MAX, the machine built for the 2nd Edition of the Rostock MAX v2 assembly manual. Here's a short video that demonstrates the before & after change to the sound the machine makes.

Thanks for lightninjay for posting the gcode file I used.

Here's the video: http://youtu.be/OfobfmrimuI

Nice.

What the video, with a microphone up next to the printer, doesn't convey is what the sound is like six feet away or in the next room.

I can sit and work in the same room as the printer, and sleep in the next room without being disturbed by the noise now that the Astrosyns are installed.

The video Gene posted certainly gives a user a reason to buy the dampers.
The difference in sound with and without the dampers was dramatic.
Good job, Gene.

Thanks, Eagle.

The funny thing is, I only installed them to show how they were installed. The noise doesn't bother me at all. I spent most of yesterday with two un-damped machines printing in the same room with me. It was no biggie. :)

Ha! I just got around to finding this thread!

That's too funny Gene, glad you liked my file enough to use it for your demonstration. :)
If at first you don't succeed, you're doing something wrong. Try again, and if it fails again, try once more. Through trial and error, one can be the first to accomplish something great.

How easy were they to install? Got mine today. Presume it's just a case of slackening up the belts at the top, undo the bottom bolts holding the stepper, move the pinion further out to accomodate for the dampers, and then reinstall and tighten up?

Will be doing mine tomorrow most likely.

In theory, that's all it takes.

Mine did not go that smoothly. :)

I didnae even have to slacken off the belts, was easy peasy:
- unscrew stepper motor, winkle it out.
- push the pulley out 7mm further along the shaft, it just fits.
- reinstall on the dampers, a screwdriver can be used to loop it around the pulley again if you can't get the required angle of the dangle.

Angle of the dangle, I like it!

Cool, hopefully do that tomorrow :).
