I've been using printed effector platforms and adapters for platforms for about a year and a half and I've never had problems. I stick with trimmer line and ABS though, since PLA is just too soft at anything over 40C. The platform shouldn't be a problem unless it's actually touching the heater block or heated bed.

Figured I should go ahead and share my initial mounting ideas for the Cyclops and Chimera using the stock platform. All designs feature a hole for wiring that will allow a 2-pin XT60 connector to pass through.
First up (V1) is for the cyclops only because the heater blocks for the chimera won't fit inside the circle of the stock platform. This mount places the nozzle in the center of the platform. Centering the nozzle offsets the heater block to one side. Minimum distance from the heater block to the platform is 1.3mm.

V2 is just a modified version of V1 and is also a cyclops-only mount. Difference is that the nozzle is now offset 3mm and the heater block is centered. Minimum distance from heater block to platform is 2.7mm with this mount.

Lastly (V3) is a top mount adapter that allows use of both cyclops and chimera, but loses some Z-height. The reason it is stepped rather than flat is so that I can still use my platform LED's....and it should add some stiffness.

I am also working on a 4th version that will allow use of both cyclops and chimera and not loose so much Z-height. It requires a different fan setup though, so I'm still working on it.

Due to an advance from a customer I now have a Cyclops on order. He even said he wasn't in a hurry for me to start producing stuff and I can prototype in PLA and ABS for now. How nice!
Seems like by the time the Cyclops gets here you guys will have worked out a good mount for it.

I'll guess that the Volcano is a new INDUCTION HEATED hot end.
I imagine a nice little soft iron sleeve right around the nozzle, perhaps the nozzle actually threads INTO the soft iron sleeve.

E3D Volcano is a super high flow add-on pack for E3D HotEnds using a long melt zone gives the plastic a longer residency time in the hot-zone so that you can print thicker layers at high speed with better strength!

Alright Josh, I have a question - hopefully it's a softball for ya.
What would be the difference between printing thick layers of ABS with a volcano nozzle at 240, vs. a standard nozzle at something like 260? I think there are .8mm versions of both nozzles, so for the sake of the argument, let's say that's what we're working with.
My logic is that even though the standard nozzle has a shorter melt zone, the higher temperature would compensate for that resulting in overall equal heat transfer into the plastic. Am I missing something?

Also, how about the 0.6mm and 0.8mm regular nozzles? Are they interchangeable with the same-sized volcano nozzles or do we need to buy all new nozzles for the new heater blocks?

I can answer this one - v6 blocks/nozzles don't work with Volcano blocks/nozzles. Actually I guess you could use a Volcano nozzle in a v6 block, but that would definitely be an *unsupported* configuration.

To increase flow rate you need more heat into the plastic per second.. so you either increase the thermal gradient and thus flux (by turning up the heat) or you give the plastic more time to reach processing temperature. Under normal printing circumstances the plastic will come within 5dec or so of the nozzle, so when you slow down this falls so that there is almost no temperature difference making the maximum difference experienced 5deg or so. However when you start artificially increasing nozzle temp to compenate for the extra speed your delta goes up so when you slow down you cook the plastic or just generally get variable print temperature which is less than ideal! With that said, an increase of a few degrees to get some extra mm/s is just fine and is even more effective and efficient on volcano.

Wow awesome news that I guessed "closest"...though I was still way off I feel like. I'm excited to give this a go on my machine since I usually am all about structural components more so than trinkets. I'll shoot you a PM Josh.
Have you guys done much testing on how the long melt zone works with retracts on bowden setups?

I could not resist the new hot ends! I ordered a V6 setup for 1.75mm Bowden, a Volcano Eruption Pack and a Cyclops. The Volcano is a great idea. I've been pushing using a .7mm nozzle for some big parts and have to go slow. I'm looking forward to fast printing with those big nozzles. And who could pass on a mixing dual extruder? I only have 4 printers so I might need to add another one or two to have all of these hot ends on line at the same time!

Your work area must be huge! Wishing you the best and if you need a new printer

Three or so months back I bought two E3D v6's with the pan of going to dual print heads so I could print dissolvable supports. Well, life (ie work!) got in the way and I'm just now getting to where I have the time to do the mod, but now I'm thinking I should wait a few weeks.
As I said, my main reason for going dual extrusion was for printing supports. I primarily plan to print in abs with hips for support. To my understanding, both print at the same temps, so I think this Cyclops head would be ideal for what I plan to use it for, and really, it seems to me that is exactly what it was designed for. Anyone from E3D care to comment on that and/or confirm that this is the scenario that has been yielding the "excellent results)?
Anyway, it's looking as though I might have two never used v6's sitting around awhile longer... Maybe I'll have to build a couple more printers with them, or something. Hahaha.
