Slices not in contact with bed

Post by Tonkabot »

I am trying to print this new lid for the coffee grinder - the old one fell down and got half melted in the dishwasher.

I made the model in spaceclaim. printing with MC 1.2.1, Max V2

However, when I go to print it, according to matter slice the first 3 layers have nothing on them, and it starts to print with it up almost 1 mm above the bed.

I discovered a 'bottom clip' option on the slicer, and when I set that to .5mm it seems to all work fine and make a skirt and put the layers on the bed like it should.

Did I do something wrong, or is Matter slice doing something wrong? Cura also insisted that there was at least one layer of air before there was any printing.

Is there something wrong with my model?

Hmm, interestingly, in a curveball from Left field, Craftware slicer actually lays down your first layer fine, but wants to make your entire model solid, meaning it fills in the hollow void of the lid that you designed, making a thick Brick-lid-thing.

Have you done much manifold object modeling in "spaceclaim"?

Sorry, I am unfamiliar with the program. I use Autocad 2015 with a student license since I am designing and modeling for my senior year thesis project. It exports objects as STL's ONLY if they are properly manifold objects. Can be a real pain sometimes, but it saves YEARS on yelling at the slicer for you feeding it a crummy file to slice.
If at first you don't succeed, you're doing something wrong. Try again, and if it fails again, try once more. Through trial and error, one can be the first to accomplish something great.

I barely know how to use spaceclaim, (except it seems easier than other modellers).

I will have to see what I can do to make it 'manafold' I would think it knows how even if I don't.

I also see that the current print has left a gap at about layer 14, where there is not going to be a good join between the upper and lower halves of the model.
