Little nubblies coming out from places where printer seeks

Post by jarek319 »

Hi guys! I'm trying to get my filament settings perfect, and I was wondering which parameter I would have to change to get these little anomalies from appearing in my prints. By watching the printer, I gathered that these occur whenever the printer finishes a segment and seeks over to another part of the object to keep extruding once it reaches the new place, so I'm assuming something is wrong with the retraction, like it should be happening earlier so that the end of the filament "catches up" perfectly in time for the print head to seek without trailing these nubblies behind.

Do a search for retract settings. I have my retract set at 2, and they seem to go away.

It will vary based on what you are printing and how the slicer you used did its magic. It will vary based on the filament you are using, the temperature of the extruder, and the amount of pressure remaining in the hotend after the last line segment before the move.

I run fairly aggressive retract settings on almost every print. It works well for most of what I print, but on soft filament or code with frequent retracts, it may chew up your filament.

I'm using PLA that likes higher temps, usually printing at 215-220C. My retract settings are 5.5mm at 110mm/sec. I think high speed for retraction really helps reduce the ooze globs.

Thanks, I'll start with raising the speed of retraction. I'm running ABS for now, just getting a feel for it before i move onto PLA.

I checked in matter control, and it says my length is set to 8mm and speed is 110mm/s. i guess my ABS is extra oozey, so I'll try raising those already seemingly high values...

Those retract settings are pretty high, so perhaps it is not the settings of how to retract that need changing. Lower the values/limits for _when_ to retract. Might be worth verifying that your travel speed is high enough, too. I run 300mm/sec on objects that are nowhere near the edge of the build plate. 250 for most. Lower when objects are near the edge.
