Orion is on his way

Post by D-Ring »

Just ordered an Orion and it shipped today so should be there soon. Just getting started in the 3d printing world, any suggestions on what to use to prep model for printing and initial settings. Been looking at Cura, MatterControl and of course Repetier. Liking the interface with MatterControl but hoping someone has can help me get started with learning all the settings some (or point me towards a good guide to explain all the settings and what they do). Also have read a bunch on getting prints to stick...should i look into getting some PEI or something from the start?

Welcome to the Forum!
Have you downloaded and read the Orion documentation which is here: http://download.seemecnc.com/orion/Orio ... -2ndEd.pdf

The PEI is a good solution but it is not a miracle cure for getting your prints to stick. The Z0 height will need to be set to a value that gives the
best "stickability", after that it performs well.

We have an Orion subforum, an Orion documentation subforum and a MatterControl subforum.
Mattercontrol does not have a comprehensive settings and what they do, as far as I have seen. You may want to start with easier to use slicers such as
Cura or Slicer that is a component of repetier host.

You will try to help to answer your questions as we can but it can be a long process to learn everything you need to know, just ask and someone will do
their best to help you.
Happy Printing!

I've used pei on my Orion from the beginning. It is awesome! And simply3d as a slicer.
Good luck with the Orion, I had a lot of fun learning on it.

Amazon is a good source. Most on this forum use .03 inches and it is secured by using 3M Adhesive Transfer Tape 468MP, 5 Mil usually the 1/2" wide or the 3/4" wide.

The tape can be hard to source, if amazon doesn't have it try Ebay.

This is a 12x24 sheet. Gives you a spare piece. It cuts easily with a good pair of shears.

This is a 12x12 piece. You can cut it into strips to make it easier to apply . The tape seems to be back ordered?

Hey just wanted to follow up and say thanks for the initial tips. Bought the stuff for the PEI havent installed it yet as I just got the Orion setup today and playing with some test prints first. With just a quick calibration was able to print the blinky piece no problems. Then printed calibration steps (5mm). My z height wasnt quite low enough so working on that now but other than that it came out pretty good. Eveything is close, the heights are off by one layer thickness and the widths are within .05mm, see link
