Just getting my Orion 3D Printer dialed in

Post by briankb »

Hi,

I unboxed and setup my Orion machine this past Monday. And I was fairly impressed with the packaging and all the extras that were included so you could get started right away. And out of the box with only an adjustment to the Z-Homing height it printed well.

Previously I've had a few other 3D printers with my most experience coming from the beta process for the Printrbot Simple and then upgraded Simple to v2 (wood) and upgrading the XY to a belt after printing a few parts. It's offline right now with some issue with the feeder but I expect to fix it and get it back online soon. Despite its age it can still produce a very good quality print in PLA.

The past two days I have been doing my best to get my Orion dialed in and able to print accurate dimension models. It is still a work in progress. I was able to get it within 0.002 for flatness and within 0.10 on dimensions. According to Seemecnc support I need to know dial in the extruder multiplier. (just finished as I wright this). The latest print of a 5mm calibration step cube I am very close to spot on to 5mm step blocks. I will make another minor change in the multiplier and see if it will allow a nut and bolt print to work as expected.

So in short I'm very impressed with the machine. The Delta calibration has thrown me off a good bit but I now know the proper procedure.

Hopefully I can get this machine dialed in to spot on tonight, if not I'll post my results in another post and ask for advice from all of you. I've been reading the forum for the past week and half and there is a LOT of great information and fellow makers here on this forum.

It certainly sounds as though you are getting everything worked out, great job!
You could download the latest Max V2 assembly manual and there is a section on there that
tells you how to calibrate your cold extruder, perhaps that could be of help to you.

Yes it was a great help. It has so much more detail than the Orion manual. I had to adjust all of my thinking to the Delta configuration as my previous calibration experience was with a Printrbot and Makerbot clone.
