Whats that Squeaking Sound?

Post by BONE »

Can anyone help with this high pitched squeaking sound? It started doing after I put dampers and TL arms on. I've tried adjusting the bands on the arms and touching panels to see I quiet the noise to pin point the source. It's one of those sounds you can't really tell where it is coming from.

Well thats annoying!!! best advice I can give it to get a stethasope and listen to various points to try and narrow it down. if you dont have one a screwdriver pushed up against you ear firmly while probing possible points of interest will help.. Or even a hollow tube to channel the sound to your ear.

I got a similar sound a couple of months back.

The shaft had seized inside the aluminium Ujoint.

Mine was stuck good and the shaft was moving together with the ujoint.

your sound seems to be metal against metal. So i would guess your u joint is about to seize up, or it already has and the shaft is rubbing against the retaining screw on the carriage.

Looks as it it is your Y tower so i would start there.
When on mobile I am brief and may be perceived as an arsl.

I had a similar sound. It was actually the fan shroud scrapping along the part. I sanded down the shroud to provide more clearance and the squeaking went away.

Which fan was it?

The noise mine has seems to be dependent on movement, but something could be flexing a fan causing the squeak. Would love to find it.

I think QuantumTitan meant that one of the fan shroud's was rubbing on the part as it printed, not that the fan itself was squeaking.

can you make it squeak with printer off and moving platform around by hand?

It could be coming from the cheapskates or idler pulleys.

does it go away if you run without the Zero-Lash straps?

Do all the rod end joints move freely when off printer?

I think teoman's suggestion was the most likely source of the squeaking.

The fan shroud is the stock E3D unit. Does not even come close to touching the part.

All the balls in the joints are free for the TL arms.

I can not make them squeak by moving it around by hand. The squeak seems to come and go at different speed movements.

I'm thinking that it could be a belt rubbing on something or the rubber bands on the TL arms, I'll try removing them to see if that makes a difference.

I had a squeaking issue several months ago. I switched from aluminum u-joints to acetal u-joints at the suggestion of the forum and seemecnc support. However this did not fix the issue. I also suspected the belts rubbing and found some evidence of the belts rubbing around both the top and bottom bearings.

I solved my issue by printing the belt tensioner found here: http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... +tensioner

Once they were installed and leveled correctly, the belts slowly stopped squeaking over the course of a few prints, not sure why it took time but it was defiantly not an instant fix.

I've had that at times. Are you printing PLA? I think it's the sound of the nozzle sliding over the previous layer, especially during "combing" moves (if you use cura).

I just ignore it haha.

I think I've narrowed it down to somewhere in the lower Y-axis tower. It seems to be some rubbing going on with the belt somewhere in there. Have to find some time to take it apart and look at it.

My X belt squeaks, it's riding to one side of the idler next to the motor. If I guide the belt over where it enters the base (like with my fingernail while printing) it will go away for a minute but then come back. I think the solution is to file the hole where the idler screw goes in, to change the angle of the idler.

I also got squeaking in two of my lower idler pulleys when I used t-glase and the dust/crumbs from the t-glase worked their way in between the surfaces of the pulley. I loosened the screws and just spun it around in my finger to clear it.

I just installed dual extrusion on my machine, all my existing motors are Wontai(sp?), the new extruder is a Kysan - it squeeks and squeals and has a constant high pitch tone to it. What motors are on your printer?

I just went over the all the screws mounting the towers and they were all loose. I think that the vibrations are loosening all the hardware.

I was able to get my finger on the belt and push it aside alittle and the noise went away. I'm going to have to take it apart and look at it. Something is going on.
