Windows XP not liking Rambo driver

Post by redtank »

Hello,
Up to this point I've been using my Windows 7 laptop to communicate with my Max V2. Got everything set up and running well, but I really want to use an older HP laptop running XP SP3. Following MatterControl's instructions I'm unable to install the driver with XP complaining: "A service installation section in the INF is invalid". Is there a work around for this problem or just my misfortune? Anyways, having fun printing ABS doing fasteners, both straight UNC and NPT threads.

Thanks,
Cris

Let me ask this: is anyone using a Windows XP pc to communicate with a Rambo board?

Thanks,
Cris

I don't have any experience using XP with my printer, but I could offer two possible alternatives:

1. Use the XP laptop to slice your models and load the gcode onto an SD card. Benefit: bypasses the nonfunctional rambo driver, you can turn off your laptop while printing, random windows updates/reboots won't kill your print
2. If all you're doing with the laptop is running your 3d printer, get rid of XP and install Linux on it, which doesn't need an additional driver. Benefit: OMG LINUX OPEN SOURCE YAYYYYYYY!!!

Option 2 is my favorite... ;)

Ben,
Thank you for the reply. Okay, maybe loading gcode on sdcard is the solution. I'm running some Windows only software on the XP laptop so Linux isn't an option. Funny thing is I have a Linux partition on the laptop I'm not wanting to use

I have an old Thinkpad R51 running WinXP and it properly drives my Rostock Max V2 printer. I have SP3 installed and all available updates through EOL.

Be very careful with Windows XP computers. They're not supported by Windows update anymore, and are susceptible to hacks. I wouldn't run one connected to a network.
