Anyone tried Coex?
Re: Anyone tried Coex?
I wrapped a pipe cleaner around my filament where it goes into my extruder. Cleans off everything nicely. Pretty cheap and easy too.

That is a good freaking idea. I'll have to pick up some pipe cleaners next time I'm out.

Alright, I'm proud to report that the replacement spool from Coex arrived yesterday and it prints quite nicely! I think I mentioned in a previous post that the filament on the spool is nice and shiny, and I was hoping that effect would persist on the finished part. It really does - the part is nice and glossy right off the printer, and that's for both the maroon PLA and the magenta ABS that I've printed with. The new spool of ABS is nice and clean too - I gave the spool a really close look and didn't see any evidence of the same problem the previous spool had, and after printing two test cubes I didn't see any grime stuck in the melt zone when I pulled it out either.
Here are some pics, I couldn't capture the glossiness but you can see that the "ugly mud brown" layers are gone, and the melt zone is clean. I'm really happy with this. Thanks Jim for nudging me to get in touch with these guys, I might've just written it off as a learning experience otherwise.
Bottom line is that I think I just happened to have really bad luck with my first spool, but Chris from Coex was a rock star and responded to every one of my emails within an hour and got a replacement in the mail the next morning. Stellar customer service for sure and I'll definitely be buying from these guys again.
I think I'll also update my original post so any googlers that wander in don't get the wrong idea and leave before reading this far.
