Fixing the little problems in the print - How?

Post by Surf314 »

I just finished building a Rostock Max v2. It's my first experience with a 3d printer and I'm pretty darn happy and amazed that everything actually works. However, I have no idea how to tweak things to fix the little problems with the prints. Here is a picture of a fairly detailed print I just finished:

As you can see it's almost perfect. There are a few defects however, and after much googling and searching the forums I've only been able to find the fix to one of them. I'm hearing pops when I print and I get these little divots. I found out that my filament was shipped with moisture problems (from Amazon). So I know how to fix that issue. The rest are puzzling me.

Under his leg cuffs and his arm is pretty ratty. I believe this is a bridging problem? I'm not quite sure how to fix this. I believe they are sagging which I think means I need to have the bridges print faster - is this correct?

The other problem I'm getting is these random little knobs where plastic is where it shouldn't be. I have no idea what causes this or what to look for to fix it.

The final problem is a line that appeared on the side of his chest. There is also a burn mark in there. What could have caused that?

I know I'm pretty fortunate to get such good prints right away, but now I'm trying to learn how to solve the mysteries of drilling down and getting perfect prints.

The "Strategies" posted by mhackney in the General Tips & Tricks forum might be useful to you. Essential reading for all of us.

Little blobs could indicate that you need to calibrate your extruder. There is an excellent YT video on that subject - search for "esteps calibration".

Burn mark might be contamination in or on the filament. Print a little plastic funnel (I think there is one on repables) for the hole where filament passes through the top plate of your Max. The remnants of the laser cutting process may be depositing soot on the filament as it passes through the plate. Could also be excess extrusion glob that is accumulating on the outside of the nozzle and getting discolored by heat before it gets wiped on onto the next layer.
