Modicum Extruder - New belt drive extruder design. V1

Post by jaguarking11 »

I designed a new extruder.

The goals for this extruder were/are

1 - size (must be small)
2 - Lash (must have as little as possible)
3 - Cost
4 - Easy to manufacture
5 - Torque
6 - Must be able to push flexible filament through

I went through many iterations and tested out allot of my designs by printing and installing them on my machine.

This is the end result. I think I did rather well on this one.

The design looks nice. I'm in the middle of figuring our a new dual extruder setup for machine and was looking into a few of the belt drive designs around the interwebs. Do you have a link to the BOM and STL files so that I can take a look?

I have not tested this with flexible filament just yet. However it was designed with flexible filament in mind. As of now I am not yet comfortable with sharing the STL's. I will do so when I feel this thing has been put through its paces. I plan on selling these in small batches soon, I would like to fund my next project (Micro delta printer) with these.

As for running dual filament, I could make a design that would integrate two of these together. However I feel having them as single units is much more adapt and lower cost to the user.

I will keep you guys posted. I will be ordering parts to make 10 of these this week. Having a bit of a supply problem with the 5mm hardened shafts I am using. The manufacturer is out of stock.

I completely forgot I had this thread here. In either case I open sourced my extruder and was featured on youmagine.

Youmagine link including BOM-> https://www.youmagine.com/designs/modicum-extruder-v1

Youtube video on assembly -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6maXKwhpYU

I am also selling a few of these. I built 3 green ones as of now. I sold 1 already. Here is another link. -> http://www.ebay.com/itm/151610555692?ss ... 1555.l2649

This is the last link to my blog concerning this thing. -> http://engineerd3d.ddns.net/modicum-v1-open-source/

What do you guys think?

I do have one in stock. Its also green. I will be printing some black extruders soon. They are made in ABS. Send me an e-mail to [email protected] for further details. One thing to keep in mind is that at the time I am only shipping to US.

I am also interested in the extruder and would like to see more pictures at different angles so that I may understand where the stepper is, etc.

Thank you for sharing this and hopefully this can grow to be more than just a hobby.

The only pics I have are on youmagine. https://www.youmagine.com/designs/modicum-extruder-v1

I believe the user above will purchase the last of my pre built units. I will manufacture more of them in the coming days. Out of curiosity, do you guys have a color preference? In either case. Feel free to e-mail me and I will work out the details. I am selling these for 60USD shipped in the US fully assembled with a pigtail on the motor. You just solder the wires and add two screws and mount it.

Thank you for the support guys.

I would buy one if it was in black rather than green :)

Just let me know when it's available - consider one of the black ones, sold.

I will see what I can do about shipping to israel. However I do not have much experience in shipping outside the US, and some parts of europe. I will see what the calculated costs are.

Perfect!

By the way, what is the drive ratio?

I just finished this batch last night. I have been going through a printer upgrade the last week or so. Everything from the hot end to the arms to the bearings to the carriages and end effector have been upgraded. I even added a DC-DC power converter to my bed to overdrive it and make it heat up much much faster. In either case. Send a PM if you wish to purchase one of these.
