New Rostock Max V2 Owner
New Rostock Max V2 Owner
Hi!
Just purchased a Rostock Max V2 as my first 3d printer - got it during the MWRRF this year. Been printing with it for about a week now, and getting fairly decent results. It's pretty well stock, except for a switch to the Prometheus V2 hotend (stupid RTV).
Jumped right in to printing with PLA (using colorfabb black to start, but just got some seemecnc pla, too) and trying to get the hang of things. I definitely plan to add two more part cooler fans (possibly today, even).
Right now I'm trying to figure out how to calibrate retracts to reduce stringing, but when I go into matter control and look at the printer -> extruder settings, I only see "Nozzle Width" (set to .4mm for the prometheus) and "Extruder Offset" - no where to set the retract settings. (I see the same in the profiles from the dropdown menus). How can I see / set retract amount & speed?
Other than that minor issue, so far I'm loving the rostock. Looking forward to getting past these initial tweaks and tests!

Be sure that you switch to "Advanced" in the settings window so you can see everything.kraegar wrote:Hi!

I know I've seen them but I don't remember if they are in the main settings or in the filament profiles but I bellieve I saw it somewhere in the filament secition.

I'll keep looking, but so far I don't see them anywhere.
I'm using the "default" Matter Control / Matter Slice... though I've heard switching to something like KISSlice can help. Being totally new, I'm open to suggestions.

kraegar, if you haven't already, I recommend reading the two posts in my signature below. They will get you off on the right foot. Read the posts I've made on fans too - cooling air directed in the RIGHT place is much, much better than just a lot of air flow. The later can lead to other issues that are best avoided. This is a case where more is not better.
I don't use MatterSlicer but I am sure it supports retract settings. These are usually an "advanced" option on slicers. I wish slicers wouldn't do that since it leads to more confusion than not, but eh. With PLA, a slow retract is better - 25mm/s or so. I've written a lot about this so search my posts on "retract" to get more information. With the stock hot end, 1-2mm is probably in the ballpark. Remember, this is the amount that the incoming raw filament is retracted, so 1mm retract is going to completely empty the nozzle.

Ok, I found the retract settings - they're under filament, and it defaulted to 6.5mm. Probably too high?
I'm sure I'm jumping in over my head before I should here, I should probably slow down and post some of the prints I've been getting so far. (I was trying to print the "hollow pyramid", which is pretty advanced for < 5 days printing since I finished the build!)
And yeah, I have both of those posts bookmarked!

Yes, 6.5mm is ridiculously too high. I wonder why they picked that default?

Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
I have my first layer set at .2, and it measures at .25 on my calipers. Is this "close enough" - if not, how do I tune this? Is it a z-height change? Or recalibration of all my axis?
(I have trouble printing your cylinder test... the filament isn't "primed" and for whatever reason it goes straight to printing the cylinder rather than printing the extra outer ring around it to prime things, so the first layer of the cylinder never prints right. Everything else I print does the larger outline to prime the filament and get things flowing... not sure how to force that for the cylinder)
Also, will one of the bed leveling test prints work on the max v2?

Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
Printed the orion levelling aid - definitely some tuning to do on my towers. With a first layer height set at .2, I'm ranging from .26 - .30 as I measure around it.
I did have to stop the print before it finished - got a *really* weird noise coming from the base of the printer. I thought one of the grub screws had backed out and a motor was just spinning by the sound, but all of my belts are still moving smoothly. I have no idea what it was, but man was it loud. Not a sound I've heard from it before, so need to sort that out asap!

Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
Ok, that was just a wayward wire tie decided it wanted to befriend the rambo fan.
Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
.25 vs .20 is 20% off. You can do better than that and yes, it is a simple Z height adjustment.
You should be able to turn on the outer priming perimeter in MatterSlicer I would think - this is a slicer setting not something in the model. If it isn't printing that, simply extrude a little filament into air and then wipe it off and print. Yes the bed leveling tests work on the Max. There is a nice Max specific one too by highcooley.
Those pesky wire ties!

Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
So, here's some odd behavior. Tried reprinting the pyramid with the 4mm retract setting. It's going very well... in two directions. When moving Left/Right (between the X & Y axis) it lifts and retracts wonderfully. However, when moving towards or away from the Z-Axis, there's no lift/retract. So I have stringing on two sides, and two towers that are ... not good. And two towers that look great, with no stringing on those sides. Time to hunt in the settings some more!
Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
That is odd. You could try rotating the part 45° in the slicer and see what happens then.
Curious, why did you set retract to 4mm when I suggested 1-2mm?

Uh, I missed/forgot where you said 1 - 2mm (and was remembering something I'd read elsewhere, I think). I'll lower it some more, thanks!
Currently printing a fan blower shroud, picked up two more fans today for the PLA. Print is looking great so far... but then it has no overhangs, etc.

Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
Oh, as for 1mm emptying the nozzle - probably for the stock, but I'm using the prometheus. The nozzle is a lot longer.
Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
I think the bore length on the Prometheus is still relatively short so 1-2mm should be fine.

I split the difference at 1.5.

Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
Kraegar, I also wanted to welcome you to the forum.
Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
Thanks for the welcome!
Here's my fan shroud I printed last night - I got some slight lifting on the corners, but nothing major (First time I've had that, but also hadn't cleaned the glass yet).
It's been one week since I started printing (with 3 of those days spent out of town for work), and I am super happy with the results I'm getting already.

Looking good. What are you using for a print surface?

Just straight onto the glass/heated bed (65c) currently. I've read up on other options for PLA, but straight onto the glass had worked well so far. I wiped it down this morning with isopropyl alcohol, and haven't gotten lift since.
Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
Here's a video of the z-lift problem. You can see it lifts for two of the moves, but not the other two. I rotated the object 45 degrees and printed again - same results. It lifts for two of the towers, straight move to the other two.

Here's the object I'm printing: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:8757
(Talked to seemecnc, going to submit it as a bug with mattercontrol).

Re: New Rostock Max V2 Owner
Today's print... Winterfell. You can see issues from where it drags the hotend when it should lift it. Overall a good print, though.

Was the default object size. I plan to reprint it bigger once I sort out the z-lift issue. It's causing all kinds of artifacts and such.
