Anyone Replace the Push Button Rotary Encoder?

Post by Pyropainter »

Hello

Has anyone here replaced the push button rotary encoder on their Smart LCD controller? Mine is getting very hard to use, when pushing the button the rotary part must rotate slightly causing numbers to increase or decrease or not selecting the intended option. Both are quite annoying. I checked a little on the web and have not been able to find what I am looking for. I do know that the rotary part on mine has 30 detents. Maybe one of you have ha the same problem an have replace yours. A part number from someone in the US would help.

Thank you for your help.

As a minor update to my original post. I removed the LCD from my printer and sprayed the rotary knob at a point where the rotary part meets the non rotary part with a contact cleaner made for electronics and blew it out with an air gun and repeated several times. This helped and now it is not so sensitive while pushing the knob. A word of warning however if you should try this. Be sure to protect the screen from the spray. I was not very careful. When first plugged in the display showed two shades of blue. Mostly lighter blue with darker blue patches that we are all used to seeing. A day later the screen has reverted backed to its normal shade of blue with the exception of a few spots around the edges. Hope this helps. I would still be curios as to a part number and a place to purchase this item in the US.

Thanks

From http://reprap.org/wiki/RepRapDiscount_Smart_Controller schematics http://reprap.org/mediawiki/images/7/70 ... scount.pdf we get the part number "BC111E5244B2" for the encoder. Not a very useful search key, sadly, almost certainly typoed.

However, looking at http://www.mouser.com/catalog/catalogusd/647/1943.pdf, I see the remarkably similar part number "EC11E15244B2" (B became E, and E&1 swapped). Check the physical specs on the diagram, but I suspect that's what you're looking for.

In the meantime, if it gets really bad, you could solder a couple wires to another pushbutton so you can activate it without touching the knob.

Thanks for the help. I will give it a try. It is not bad after the cleaning, but probably should order one before it starts acting like it was or worse. Nothing quite like Zeroing the the Vertical axis by accident....

A while back I posted a question about the push button rotary encoder on my LCD screen not working properly. Cleaning it with a spray contact cleaner did help but not for very long. Although usable, it didn't always do what it was told. Then things got worse and the push button would no longer work. After inspecting the push button encoder found that spider webs of filament and other material was rapped around the push button shaft. I was able to unwrap most of the filament and material but not all. I decided to use a small razor blade and cut thru the filament against the push button shaft and pull it out with a tweezers. It is now working properly. I hope this will help someone who is having the same experience as I have had. I do thank all who have given me help with my questions and concerns.

I was about the same - the little bits of drips and goops coming off the extruder on heating somehow found their way to the push button shaft. Removing these got it working again.
