Skirt issue

Post by Gundy1024 »

Ok everyone, my Rostock Max V2 built and did all the calibration steps till I think I have it right but I am having a small issue. I am testing with a 20mm test cube and when the printer tries to lay down the skirt is just globs it around. But when it moves to the print it seems to be doing just fine. Any ideas? You can view the print if you click the link in my signature. Thanks

That's most of the point of the skirt, unless you build a tall one in which case it will also control drafts.

The skirt is a sacrificial extrusion that cleans off any accumulated ooze (provided there's not too much) and makes sure you have the nozzle primed and at the amount of pressure it will be using during the rest of the print.

Ok, I was just used to my ROBO, it seems to print the skirt perfect every time so I just wondered. New to this kind of printer. Thanks for the info!

Well, IMBoring isn't wrong, but he's not entirely "right" either. My skirts all print properly, like your ROBO, so you probably have poor bed adhesion.

I didn't mean to imply there's nothing that can be done, but I do get the same condition on mine. If I pre-heat to the printing temperature and quickly manually prime the extruder, pull off the extruded filament, and launch the print within a couple of seconds, I can get clean extrudate within an inch or so of when it starts trying to print the skirt, but if I don't make a point to manually prime it takes pretty much the length of the entire skirt of that calibration cube before the air gets purged out of the nozzle and the pressure equalizes enough to get a clean line being laid down.

I see, I have been doing that now and am getting much better results. I have a few new questions if you have time to answer them though. Very new to this style printer and not sure how to trouble shoot issues yet. I have a topic in troubleshooting called print issues and have pics there. If you don't mind could you stop in there and look at them please.

Thanks

My V2 does similar. Skirt is mandatory for me because of this.

Thanks, I have found that you are right and I have to use it to get the hotend primed for a good first layer. Now to figure out all my other issues. :(
